Staying here again after a gap of ten years. We normally use another one quite near by but came here when that one was damaged by the tsunami. That one was unavailable this time so reverted to the Rock House and it really is excellent.

As others have said it is fairly basic so if you are looking for memory foam mattresses or fancy extras I suggest you look elsewhere. But if you want good, clean, large rooms with tiled floors and hot water in the bathrooms and a very competitive price then you could do much worse.

Perhaps more importantly it combines being very close to the centre of things with a feeling of quietude produced by being tucked away up a small hill and centred around a pleasent Central courtyard. It is run by the friendly owner (Marcus) and his equally friendly family. They and their staff are very efficient and helpful without ever being in your face.

There are a range of rooms and apartments both a/c and non a/c. Good for couples and families. As an old Sri Lanka hand (since the mid 70s) I would strongly recondmend the a Rock House for both its atmosphere and its value.

This is where I want to be again and again. I've been there once for seven days, there is a restaurant in front of the hotels. I love everything about this hotel. A family own this hotel, they also live there but of course there is a separate living place for them. Hotel rooms are so beautiful and comfortable. We climbed the hill by the hotel too. The view is awesome! I would like to go there once again. 

Stayed 2 days and one night ,owner's were glad to help on local site seen and local places to visit.recommended for individuals who love Peace and harmony .budget stay with Large spaced rooms .furnished with local style furniture's.

Big rooms with a great big balcony in a really good location... the rooms are a bit tired but overall comfortable, and the owners are fairly helpful, although communication could have been a bit better

We stayed here as a group of 6 and got 2 rooms between us.  The rooms we were were given were extremely spacious and we also got big outside areas with them on the balcony.  The hotel itself is very large so i guess there are lots of different rooms hence the differing reviews but the rooms we got were great.  Clean and with hot water.

Location is good as it is away from the busy main street and only 10 mins walk from the beach.  Jungle beach is about 30-40 mins walk the other way.  You dont get breakfast.  It was pretty cheap for us between 3, so for the money we paid (everywhere else in unawatuna was almost double) the stay was good.

Two of us spent just one night here.  It's a strangely impersonal place; we were accommodated very high p the hill in maybe a new extension, a long way from the action around the central courtyard below.  The room was utterly basic, a small double bed (with net) and virtually nothing else, but a balcony from which the sea was visible above the trees and the many buildings in between.  Unawatuna is destroying the reasons for its attractiveness - quiet, escapism, lovely beach...  I'm not sure how good Rock House would be for an extended stay, although it is quite close to, but not on, the beach.  Anyway, go for rooms nearer the reception than we were.

A large rambling guest house that crawls up a steep hill, but offers quite good value.

We stayed at Rock House for an overnight stay on a trip to Galle. It's a basic budget hotel with several pluses, and many things to improve. 

First of all, it's very close to the Unawatuna beach you can just walk over to the beach. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but they offered to arrange us breakfast if needed. But since there are many restaurants and cafes nearby, we opted to try one of them. One downside of that was most of the restaurants only offer English breakfast unless you order the previous night. 

There are several blocks of rooms at Rock House - some are modern and new and some are old. All blocks are at an elevated land so you have to burn some calories to get to those at the farthest end. However, a vehicle can go up to the very top. The top most block gives you the most spectacular view of the bay and the surrounding. So we asked for one room there. The view from the top most room was superb - both day and night. However, it seemed like those rooms were not used in a long time - there was lot of dirt in the bathroom, mosquito nets were torn and damaged. Also only one room in that block has AC. Lot of insects were coming to the room so it's difficult to stay without the AC or the net. Anyway, have to give credit to that the rooms are spacious and well furnished.

In summary, Rock House is an ok place if you are traveling on budget and wish to drop in for sleep. 

Good budget stay, lot to improve 

Probably one of the worst hotels we have ever stayed in. We had a number of problems, but the disgustingly dirty pillows and bedding was the worst. 
We moved in and noticed that the bedding was dirty. We were given clean bedding that still didn't smell or look clean. Furthermore, we made the bed and noticed that the mattresses were very dirty, but the pillows were absolutely disgustingly dirty, so we told the owner and she did nothing. The bad smell was so strong from the pillows that all four of us slept without a pillow. The kitchen was dirty, as well as the cooker and the fridge. We couldn't sleep there another night, so I spoke to both owners and showed them photos of the pillows and asked them if they would be happy to use them as a pillow, and of course they said no. So why do you expect your guests to use these dirty pillows. Also, the internet was not working, the water ran out while my daughter was taking a shower. We had to shower in a different room until they fixed the problem. Next morning, no hot water.  If you have any self-respect, you would avoid this place.
