Lotus Inn

We stayed 4 nights at Lotus Inn. The rooms are basic, clean and colourful and have all you need, especially for jaffna which is still well off the tourist trail. Sashi and her staff looked after us very well indeed and made our stay a happy one indeed. Including very prompt and efficient access to a 3 wheeler. We ate all our breakfast and several meals in the cafe on site. All delicious Tamil vegetarian food and very cheap. We walked into Jaffna Town easily from Lotus Inn (its a very short 3 wheeler ride away) We were even able to have a tray if tea and Aunties Masala Coffee in our room or sitting on the little terrace outside the room.  There is a little noise from the cafe as a previous guest remarked but did not bother us at all and that is Jaffna life, busy, bustling and happy. Very good price for a splendid stay.

We booked direct via their website well in advance for 2 upstairs rooms for 4nights overlooking the pond. An agree price of 4900LKR p/n (US$ 37) each room. We also confirmed a week out. 
Rooms were available as requested. They were clean and well appointed. There was a large communal upstairs covered balcony area which was a blessing.  
Breakfast was included in the tariff and taken in the in house restaurant... we elected the Sri Lankan breakfast which was excellent.. other meals including "short eats" can be purchased throughout the day. 
A variety of transport options can be organised via the onsite manager.  We had a half day tour along the causeways seeking water birds. The remainder walking and exploring the city. 
The kicker came on checkout when they tried to increase the tariff due to the fall of the LKR against the US$. We stuck our initial quote and had copies of emails on the agreed price in LKR. 
Apart from that unpleasantness Lotus Inn is a great place to stay and would recommend it for those wishing to visit Jaffna.

Not very central in Jaffna, we had to hire a tuk-tuk to go down town. The hotel has also scooter rental, which was very convenient as we hired one for 2 days to explore the north to point Pedro and the islands at west of Jaffna. Price of rental and the scooter were fine.

The hotel was nicely situated in a quiet garden, but not really a "boutique hotel". Our room, on ground floor behind the hotel was nice clean and large. Bed is comfortable. Bathroom is fine. 

The vegeterian restaurant adjacent to the hotel is very good and very convenient. Breakfast from the hotel is prepared by this restaurant. They serve only sri lankan food, delicious. We asked for continental breakfast and it looks like they are not used to serve it. We got only spicy omelettes and basic bred with margarine, one single cup of tea or coffee.

Nice hotel

simply the best

Since Jaffna isn't very touristy, it's quite possible this is one of the nicer places to stay. There is art (odd) on the walls, a clothes drying rack, etc. but there is also water leaking, long term, and forming a large puddle running from the toilet to the drain, very bright white florescent lighting, etc., a door that sticks, mosquitoes and no mosquito nets so it's not particularly pleasant though the garden area outside of it looks nice.

It's not particularly well located being about 2 km from the market and bus stand but there is a bus that goes directly by for Rs.20 and he only charged me Rs.10 because the distance was short!  Literally pennies in USD.   According to a local man, the autorickshaw fare should be about Rs.100.

The oddest thing is that they ask you if you want a towel and sheet. It turns out that is one amenity they have opted to make a chargable item although I think they didn't actually charge us.  They did include a breakfast but because I forgot to check the listing and they didn't tell us about it we never took advantage of it. We did go on our own to the restaurant that shares its parking lot the evening we arrived and the food was just awful. There was something wrong with the ghee.  It's not rancid use but everything tasted like cheese.  The dahl and sambar were completely cold and even the sambal, which varies all over Sri Lanka but that I always like, isn't good. Maybe it would be better at breakfast.

Not really a boutique hotel but OK for Jaffna

Staff not reliable (they gave us wrong information), smelly bathroom, air conditioner not working properly, sleep disturbed by noises, uncomfortable bed, credit card system broken, our booked bedroom was given to somebody else
