Dambulla Lake Hotel

We stayed over a single night,the service and staff the fault less,I would have gladly paid double the price for this stay just because of the service and the humble people who own the hotel,the food was great ,the rooms were fantastic clean ,tidy and spacious.the lake is a beautiful site to sit and watch the sunset drop,absolutely one place I would revisit and spend more time on my next visit .

Stop over 

by describing itself as a spa i think is very misleading and it describes itself as (direct quote from Agoda) "Year Hotel Last Renovated - 2014" Mmmm - outside maybe.

so lets stick to the facts here

Location - a long way out of Dambulla - about 8km and 500 rupees in a tuk tuk.  It was a long way from the main road (about 3km down dirt tracks) There is nothing else for miles around - shops/restaurants etc. so we felt a bit trapped. Make sure you book your tuk tuk driver to get you back to town as there isn't much chance of flagging one down out here.
Having said that - if that's what you want then this will be a great place for you

Setting - beautiful right on the edge of the lake with nice gardens and nice restaurant seating area

Rooms - we had a non AC room which had a fan. Room was grubby. Furniture old. Walls were dirty - no sign of renovation here. Bed was ok. Sheets which although they had been laundered, had stains and burn holes in them. Mozzi net was not big enough for the bed and my partner who seems to escape them every time, chose to sleep outside of it so i could have it. even then it would not completely cover me. hence the reason why on the second night i woke up with a giant cockroach running over me at 4am!

Staff - the staff were very nice and tried very hard to please. even going to the effort of going to the shops so we could have a beer with our meal. the manager and his assistant (the assistant seemed to do everything here from cook breakfast to painting walls). However the man who announced himself as the owner, came across as quite arrogant and we avoided dealing with him. he gave us an unpriced menu and said he didn't know how much the food would cost until he had bought it! very strange way to do business. he also charges way over the odds for safari and taxi services so shop around before you get there. your tuk tuk driver will be your best friend out here!

Food - we just had fried rice which was nice.
but we booked breakfast for 7:30 and we could smell the eggs and sausage being cooked at 6:30. by the time we came for breakfast (which admittedly was 7:35) it was stone cold.

And despite what Agoda says - THERE IS NO WIFI HERE!
