22 reviewsMijas Village (pueblo) must not to be confused with 'Mijas costa' (coast) an entirely different place in an entirely different location. Mijas Pueblo (village) is up in the mountains and is an ideal day trip (in season) for families, couples, singles, et al. A very safe place and cooler than the costa-del-beans n chips far below! Mijas has 3 museums (one a wine museum), 3 art galleries, 2 open air theatres, many tapas bars and is ideal for walking, ambling an moogling about in. HELPFUL HINTS -bus only costs 1€ from fuengirola (and you can get connections). -Tourist Office has a tapas trail where you only pay €2.5 for any drink and a nibble (complete all 15 tapas bars and you get a free tee-shirt for your efforts!) This tapas/drinks trail saves you €200 if you do it right! -If you want best view Oscars pizza (in the alcazar 'fortress') has live flamenco performances at night and for only €20 tou get a bottle of wine and giant pizza x 2 -the small village is arabic in design (built by the Berbers of andaluz) Mijas means Stables and was a horse stabling outpost for the Berber armies and refrigeration and water station, and fortress outpost (alcazar). Accomodation: Hotels are generally expensive but there are many persion, old bodega's and tapas bars that do accomodation like Casa Tejon (badgers house). This is an excellent location in the heart of the village and located in gardens of the tapas bar/bodega. It has 4 rooms which are basic but very cost effective at €40/night including a nice cool garden atrium with Lemon trees and bodega store! Rustic, quirky, friendly, the owner 'Santi' is a lovely man and is very helpful. If you prefer luxury you can pay 240/night for a hotel in a poor location. Casa Tejon is for rustic bohemian sorts (like myself) who like the traditional quirky low carbon outpost at €40/night for a double room with quirky ensuite! SHOPS: There are 4 shops in Mijas Pueblo (marked on map) and a supermarket erosco of sorts 'Bronski-beat shop'. Lidl is only 10 away by bus. POOL: Public pool is a 10 min walk down village towards old Benamdina route or get Bus from village square. Pool is free and has a cafe/shop. TAPAS TOUR: This tour saves you a whopping €150 and you get a free funly tee-shirt if you visit all 15 tapas bars. Each bar visit only costs €2.5 and you get a glass of wine, beer, etc and tapas. Get your card from Tourist Office and each bar stamps a donkey in a circle on the card. Excellent fun - designed by tourist office to demistify tapas touring and to make it available 'Spanish style' to visitors who will save €150 for doing it! Santi (owner of Cas Tejon) has a list of other fun things to do at his pension/hostal. Visit all the Bodegas -esp bodega Boveda (where all the locals meet) and if quiet excellent location tapas is your thing - vist La Muralla [The Old Wall] Cafe (tapas and a glass of wine only €3) beside the fountains in-the-cool of the trees. Much better value than Frajiliana and very much the safe crossover tourist village for those with kids, or young children interested in a great day or half day out in Donkey Village. Visit Dali and Picasso exhibition at local art gallery (on map). Near Casa Tejon :)
