Sunrise Cove Resort

We've been planning to go to Calatagan for weeks but it rained every time, so one weekend we decided to simply go in spite of the stormy weather. It was a long, wet road travel - Sunrise Cove was at the end of a cliffy area. There's parking but it is not covered. We paid php12k/night for the main family room (a hut with 3 bedrooms - 2 aircon rooms and 1 fan room). We're a family traveling with 2 kids (6 and 7 years old), and a college son, and a friend from Beijing. The main aircon room has its own toilet and bath; the other 2 rooms do not, but there's one common T&B. Both have hot and cold shower, and pail and dipper are also available. There's a spacious kitchen with a functioning ref and sink. There's a hot and cold dispenser but there's no water. Turned out, we're supposed to order water but due to the weather, delivery was not available. Good thing we brought plenty of mineral water. The rooms were cozy but for 12k we expected amenities - we were disappointed as there were no towels provided and only one tissue roll was available. No shampoo, soap, toothpaste were provided either. Good thing we came complete with our own toiletries. The sea waters, in spite of the moss and weeds, were clean enough to swim in, but too shallow for adults. There were also dogs and cats loitering on the beach. Fortunately the following day the rains subsided and there's an available boat ride (for 500 per head, kids at half the price; snorkel rental at 200 each). We went snorkeling and the kids were happy with the variety of fishes we saw and there were lots of clown fish (though they were caged underwater, as if they were being bred). There's an "infinity pool" back at the resort but due to the rains we only dipped in for around 30 minutes. The scenery was relaxing both at day and at night. Next time we'll visit Calatagan though, we'll explore a different resort to compare price versus value. Aside from the hefty 12k (we could have gotten a deluxe or better hotel room at this price in other Batangas hotels), the food was overpriced. We spent an average of 1000 per meal (1 breakfast, 2 lunches, 1 dinner (yes, at 12k breakfast is not free!). Food dishes were limited to sinigang, chopsuey, liempo (there were others in the menu but not available, (probably they couldn't go to market due to the rains). But serving size is just right and there's a free one refill for brewed coffee (priced at php50). Cooking and bringing your own food were not allowed, even though there's a spacious kitchen. No room service - we either ate at the restaurant or placed our orders ahead of time and then picked up the food from the restaurant to our cottage. We enjoyed the rainy weekend nonetheless, although we really felt we could have gotten more for the amount we spent on food and accommodation. The staff and the owner, and the boatmen, were friendly and accommodating by the way, so that's one consolation aside from the scenery.
