Los Faroles Hostel & Guesthouse

I stayed in Los Faroles  Hostel in a great neighborhood in Panama City near Via Veneto and Via Espana.  The hostel is well run, with very clean rooms and hot water.  It had a shared bathroom separate for  men and women.  The air conditioning worked well and the room was sparsely furnished with a bunk  bed adequate for two.  I paid $24 during Christmas vacation and it was a good deal for the neighborhood.  The hostel is located near(5 minutes walk) good restaurants and casinos that have good, inexpensive food and cheap beers. It was safe to walk at night and taxis are plentiful all the time.

Clean, cheap and safe

PROS:
- Clean room with large closet, A/C, decent bed, nothing else there really. 
- Quite cheap for a clean private room, good place to stay a first night after a long flight. 
- Offers airport pickup service for 25 dollar (from the international airport, 30min drive). May be quite expensive for Panama, but I'm guessing it would be hard to get the same deal if you just try your luck at the airport.
- There is a modern, lively street with all kinds of stores just around the corner, 2min walk.

CONS:
- No staff at the hotel; the taxi driver who picked me up from the airport handed me the keys and called the owner of the hostel so he could welcome me.
- No place to hang clothes, towel etc in (shared) showers. A/C can only be controlled for the entire hostel, not for each room seperately.
- For a 'hostel', Los Faroles has no vibe (at all). The only communal area is a streetside terrace with a few plastic chairs and tables, but nobody sits there.

Clean, cheap and basic, but no vibe. Good for after a long flight.

No staff, had to wait 45 minutes until owners showed up. Room is clean but extemely basic. Sharing shwoer and toilet between 9 rooms is just "no go". Te only comunity room is the open terrace you see on teh picture with the bars. What you get free is the TV (to be shared between all) and the coffee or tea. There is no kitchen and no breakfast and no hot water.

Well, I should have known it better but did not read the reviews..... I was there first and last time.

Yes it is economic, but nothing more.

Let's call a duck a duck. This place is AWFUL. If you really can't find somewhere better to stay for a similar price, take the bullet and book here (I think any somewhat decent short-term property rental would be better than this). The owners, or whoever they were, were about an hour late to pick us up from the originally advertised location, then they invented some excuse and took us to a different location than the one advertised, upon arrival to the "new" location, the bedroom was far from clean, they just gathered our money and we never saw them again. There were suspicious people walking around very late at night as well. The only decent thing is its location, but believe me, you can do better by staying somewhere else.

Barely a guesthouse

Owners give the male guests permission to use the communal women's bathroom/shower! When I asked one of the guests WHY he was coming out of the room clearly labeled 'Damas,' he said, "Titio told me I could use it!" Several times I was going to use the restroom, but had to wait because there was someone in the shower stall, and given that I'd only seen men at the hostel, I knew that most likely a naked man would emerge just as I was exiting the stall.

Also: the other guests blast the television on the patio at all hours of the night. If you're in the room next door, have fun trying to sleep, even with ear plugs!  There are no staff on site overnight, so whatever problems you have, or if you need directions for getting to a bus stop or restaurant, good luck!

Los Faroles is clean and fairly cheap, but it shouldn't be hard to find something better. I'm sorry I was stuck there for two nights; it's too bad people posted misleading, positive reviews here. I wound up going elsewhere the third night even though I still had to pay for the room at Faroles, and even though the other place cost twice as much. Totally worth spending the money for a good night's sleep and a safe place to take a shower.
