Tim is a great host and this is the best location to explore the area. 

We stayed in the Hut and loved it. Perfect for couples. View of the mountain from your bed. Warm shower. Fire going when you arrive. Tim will even light it for you if you are late getting home.

Can't beat that.



We were a group of 5 adults and 5 teenagers. We stayed to ski at Whakapapa and it was an ideal location.

Tim is a fabulous host. The barn sleeps 10 easily and it has fabulous character.

We enjoyed being off the grid with our teens. They played cards, helped with dishes and had to be considerate of each other in a small space. With great friends and delicious food it couldn't have been a better famiky break away from the city. 

The location is 5 minutes from a mini supermarket and some restaurants and bars.  Only 10 minutes to the Chateau and 35 minutes to Ohakune for a change of scenery too.

There are board games, theres an outdoor bbq under a verandah for cooking and the second bathroom is a godsend for a group of more than 6 people.

I loved that the accomodation includes linen and towels and cleaning. Everything has been considered here. Great cooking facilities, two fridges.

Highly recommend this venue, lovely hosts, the barn was so lovely and warm for a winter stay. We'd love to go back in summer.




Can highly recommend this property.  Tim was the perfect host and came to welcome us on arrival.  We stayed in the Barn which was huge!  Certainly more than two people needed, but it was the only option left.  Communication was good with Tim and he was quick to remedy an issue we had in the house.  My original email request was made on their “online query form”, which went into his junk email folder.  So suggest you email direct if you want a response.  
The kitchen was well equipped.  We appreciated their commitment to the environment, with separator food scraps, recycling and general rubbish.  They had a good selection of games and jigsaw puzzles (most with pieces missing!). There is a lovely outdoor area to sit, and the washing machine came with washing powder, which was great.  The Barn is better suited to larger groups, but it was a great place to stay.   Would not hesitate to come back to this whisper quiet location!

We stayed at the Hut, which is such a cute little place, lovingly decorated, with big windows to enjoy the views on a sunny day and a gorgeous fire place for the cold and rainy days.
The owners are incredibly nice and accommodating.
We can recommened this place whole-heartedly to everyone who enjoys a quiet stay with plenty of surrounding nature! :)

A group of 11 of us stayed at The Barn for a weekend when we were planning on doing the Tongariro Crossing. While the crossing didn't happen, the accomodation at Wood Pigeon Lodge exceeded our expectations. We arrived late on a Friday night, they had left the lights on for us so we could find it, as well as lit the fire so it was nice and toasty by the time we arrived. Heaps of small extra touches that really made the stay above average. It was so ideal as a big group to all be able to stay in the same place with all the facilities we needed. The views from the property were incredible, such a unique location. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay - will definitely be back!

We stayed in The Barn at Wood Pigeon Lodge for two nights while we hiked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.  The Barn has been converted really well into a comfortable place to stay, with modern/rustic bathrooms and plenty of space.  We cooked both nights with the grill and in the kitchen.  We also liked checking out the cows and sheep, which just hang out around the property.  This is exactly what you're hoping it is.

Our family of four spent three glorious nights in 'The Hut'. Its was warm, cozy and everything we hoped for. Tim, our host, was available but not intrusive. The view is second to none and we barely noticed that there wasn't a television. Wood Pigeon Lodge is definitely our first choice for accomodation near Mt Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo. Hoping to come back every year!

It was a beautiful place especially for nature lovers you will never forget it. Comfortable and cozy place. We stayed in The Hut for 3 nights. City dwellers will love this place as you will be in close touch with nature. Lovely lemon trees. We even get to try out on bush bath! Tree House was even more beautiful if youhave more people with you. So is The Barn. Only setback is perhaps the dusty curtains made from old gunny sack. My daughter suffered runny nose.

Great views of the volcanos of Tongariro. The Hut was gorgeously decorated and had all the facilities you needed including cooking utensils. Tim was friendly and accommodating. Didn’t have the fire going being autumn but it would be lovely there in the cooler months with a log fire and snow.

My closest friend booked to stay here (The Tree House) as a "mystery weekend" away.  I had NO idea where we were going, until we arrived at the top of the stairs.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the standard of the building: when the words "tree house" are mentioned, it conjures up basic accommodation and barely-there amenities.  This Tree House couldn't be further from the truth.

While the expression "rustic" can be applied, there is nothing basic about the chalet itself.  Two bedrooms - one up a ladder in the loft - and the other with almost 270-degree views of the valley and mountains.  We could also see Mt Ruapehu on the horizon (when the weather allowed) from the dining area windows.  The bathroom was ultra modern and there was more than enough steaming hot water for us all to have showers each day - no mean feat, considering we had a 17 year-old with us, and that particular age-group are not known for taking short showers!  

A fully-equipped kitchen area provided gas hob, fridge/freezer and all the necessary kitchen items.  We didn't actually use the oven (which is part of the wood-burning stove) but, if the standard of the rest of the amenities were anything to go by, I have no doubt it would have worked perfectly.

The stove kept the chalet nice and toasty - particularly since Tim had lit it about an hour before our arrival - and although my bedroom was a little chillier than I'd prefer in the evenings, the bed linen kept me nice and warm all night.  It WAS a bit of a task hauling the logs up from the store (at the car parking level), but it all added to the unique nature of the break for us.

There is no TV - if that is important for your enjoyment - but there are a number of board games, a couple of decks of cards and a small library with some interesting books about the area.  We struggled slightly with the WiFi: while I could connect my phone easily enough, both the others, with their more modern iPhones and an iPad, weren't able to.  Tim did sort this issue out, but the speeds were very slow, compared with what we're used to here in Auckland.  It wasn't a great issue for us (though you can only begin to imagine what earth-shattering importance it held for the 17 year-old!) but it's possibly something to bear in mind if an internet connection is a vital part of your break.

On our last night there, the weather was DREADFUL and we spent much of the night wondering whether the wind was going to cause any damage.  Fortunately, it didn't, and it is testament to the quality of the build that we never once felt any draughts, despite the winds reaching almost gale-force intensity.

The Tree House is not suitable for less able-bodied guests, as there are 50+ steps leading up from the car parking area.  There are no handrails and, while there are lights that switch on automatically, you have to reach almost halfway up the stairs before they do.  It can be "interesting" climbing the stairs in the dark/rain, after a couple of drinks!  :)

Not only is the accommodation itself first-class - it was clean enough to perform surgery on any flat surface and my bed, at least, was extremely comfortable - the location is great for the Whakapapa skifield, Chateau Tongariro and National Park.   

We had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
