Mountain Lodges of Nepal - Phakding

This is a luxury hotel located just south of Phakding. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. Most of the food is locally resourced making it very fresh. The evening meal is a set affair which is common in the Everest region. The breakfast was also a very good spread of choices. 
 The room was very clean the bed comfortable and plenty of blankets to keep you warm. The bathroom is basic and the shower provides hot water only in the afternoon due to it being solar heated. If you get a room at the back you have a lovely view over the Dudh Koshi river, the front rooms view is nothing special. 
 It’s obviously much more expensive than anything else on offer in Phakding but I felt it offered value for money and I would stay here again

We stayed here on our first night of a 12-day trekking trip. It was a great start. The facility is clean and well kept. The rooms have electric blankets. The food was excellent. The downside is this was our first night at a teahouses donut spoiled us too much and made the other teahouses pale in comparison.

My wife and I went with some friends for a 1 week trek (2 weeks for the others) along the Everest Base Camp trail. We were mostly in our fifties, but one of us was 82 years old. 

We flew from Kathmandu to MLN's Lukla lodge, where we had a delicious breakfast and then on to Phakding, then Monjo, then Namche and finally Thame. The others continued further along the trail.

The trip was fantastic. Naturally, the Himalaya didn't disappoint, as they never do, but being of a certain age, we really appreciated the support of the friendly staff and the comfort of the warm beds, hot showers and delicious food. This was true of all the lodges. The Phakding lodge stood apart because it has had a renovation, along the lines of a Swedish home or an Aspen luxury skiing lodge. Strangely, this really worked well. The trail, the villages, the backdrop, the decor and the staff all provided all the local charm you would want, but the renovated lodge at Phakding gives you that luxury sanctuary at the end of a long day. 

All the lodges on the trail were very comfortable with hot showers, warm beds and friendly, hospitable staff. But each had their own distinctive charm.

Run by a sharp family, called Sherpa, who own the lodges and have been organising treks for decades, it is a first class experience. I have already recommended MLN to others and whether first timer or seasoned trekker, I would recommend it to you, too.

I stayed at Mountain Lodge Phakding, Namche, Monjo and Lukla.  I was absolutely thrilled.  I loved the locations, special rooms and views and attention to building details.  The food is the best in the valley.  Happy hour is so fun!  And also unusual for the valley.  worth every extra penny!

OUR STAY:

Yeti Mountain Lodge – Monjo – 1 night – 18th April, 2023
Yeti Mountain Lodge – Namche Bazaar – 2 night – 19th and 20th April, 2023

LOCATIONS:

The locations of all the three properties are beautiful. 

Phakding lodge is touching Dudh Koshi River with three main buildings – first is reception, lounge and dining area beautifully decorated using local materials, second and third are residential blocks with ground and upper level. There is well maintained garden and open vistas in front of all three structures. We enjoyed taking a walk post dinner and also early morning next day to get acclimatized.  

Monjo Lodge is just before the Monjo village with large walk way from the road to the main building. There is an open sit-out in front of the main structure over-looking the fields and main road. The views of the surrounding mountains need to be enjoyed.

Namche Bazaar Lodge is further 100 plus meters uphill after trekkers enter the town. It is a secluded location giving mesmerizing views of the surrounding mountains and the town. The sunrise viewing platform is just 5 to 10 minutes uphill easy climb behind this lodge. The views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and sunrise slowly falling on them is a sight which tourists can never forget. 

ROOMS:

The rooms at all the three lodges are spacious with en-suite bathrooms with running hot water. At Namche Bazaar lodge, they use solar power and therefore they recommend taking refreshing shower around early evening time. The beds/ blankets at all three lodges are electrically heated and guests can enjoy a good night sleep with good quality comforters and linen. The management has taken utmost care to ensure that the guests are comfortable and cozy in all weathers.

FOOD:

This group of hotels have a very good system of happy hours between 5.30 to 6.30 pm when guests can mingle with each other and share their experiences. But, our experience is – guests sit and chit-chat in their own groups instead of meeting other guests and share their experiences. The Management serves some snacks and drinks (like ginger-honey-lemon tea, coffee, spices infused local rum Khukari) to all guests. The guests can also buy their own other drinks. 

Dinner is served individually to all group of guests in the dining area at 6.30 pm followed by a sweet dish and coffee/ tea. 

Sumptuous breakfast is also served in to the guests depending on each group’s program for the day.

As we are vegetarians, we were served good varieties of vegetarian food – both at dinners and during breakfasts. We had no reason to complain at any of the three lodges.

STAFF:

The staff is courteous and promptly takes care of all needs and comforts of all guests. 

Our stay at all the three lodges made our trekking experience at this altitude more comfortable and enjoyable. We thank the management and the entire staff for taking good care of us and wish they continue to do so at all times.       


We went trekking and spend one night on 28 th April 2023 with my wife , and we like the hotel , and love the staff ,the manager was very nice and helpful , as well as the rest of the staff , the food  was well presented and of very good taste , the bedroom was clean and had everything we need

Perfect beginning to the EBC Trek. 

Rooms: Beautiful king-sized bed with electric blanket (not needed - the duvet was plenty warm). Very clean. All guests are welcomed with cookies & tea and provided with slippers to wear to rest your feet and keep the lodge clean. The hot shower was very welcome, and it was nice having a working sink and flush toilet (including toilet paper!). Great accommodations, not unlike any quality western hotel. 

Dining room & food: Great food! We were the only guests here at the time and they were very accommodating to all dietary restrictions. There was unlimited tea and hot water as well as a nice happy hour before dinner with popcorn and more liquids. We were always so well-hydrated at all the YMHs.

the walk from lulka to phakding is quick and not very taxing..the lodge is really good..comfortable rooms, great toilet, the sound of the river in the background, great food and service and a lovely sun room!!

We made a booking at Yeti Mountain Home for a private trek and stayed at their lodges in Phakding, Monjo, Namche and Thame. Pasang Sherpa from Yeti took care of everything commencing at the moment we arrived at KTM airport. Yeti provided us some basic gears such as duffle bags and poles, and their lodges all equipped with nice hot shower and electric blanket. They also have filtered water and served only boiled hot water, It took away our burden to pack for our bags, poles, sleeping bags and even water purifying tabs and filtration system (I brought all those with me last I did the three passes with ordinary tea houses). Our trekking guide, Lhakpa Sherpa greeted us in KTM and flew with us to Lukla. It is very helpful to have your local guide to take care our check-in luggages and make sure we get on the flight. Nevertheless, Pasang stayed in touch with us along our journey whilst Lhakpa was a solid trekking guide and made sure we got the best out of our trip. He could go on and on about mountain stories, Tibetan culture and suddenly stopped us for sighting mountain goats, musk deers and danphes scattered 50m away from us. Thanks to him, he bought some fresh vegetables from the farmer along the trek and we could taste the mountain green. There was a lot of fun with Lhakpa,

Yeti lodges are cosy and well staffed by young and passionate local people. All lodges are well supported with hydro-electiricty or solar power. We did have an outage for one of the night (out of ten). It happened in Phakding which is totally understandable as the valley might not be benefited by the sun in the mist. We stayed at Phakding for two nights (on the way to Monjo and back from Namche). The night we got back, teh power was back and we enjoyed strong and hot shower as good as home. Nevertheless the night we had an outage, we were given a plastic water bag to keep our bed warm. There is a helicopter landing spot.

Yeti Monjo is probably the most beautiful lodge of Yeti (except for Kongde where we did not manage to visit). It has an open view of Mt Thamserku and the garden is beautiful. They have a cosy lounge where we sat by the fire and served with tea and fresh popcorns. There is a green house where they grow very nice organic tomato.

Yeti Namche is nicely located at the top of the valley. We have a magnificent panorama view of the entire valley and the surrounding mountains. They have a lounge where we got to see most other guests and their guides. It is almost like an expedition experience at a base camp. Food is awesome and they changed the menu everyday and even surprised us with hot pots one of the nights. We checked in and out of Yeti Namche three times and each time we checked in after a long trek. It really felt like home. Most guests stayed before and after their trek to EBC and for acclimatisation day.

Yeti Thame is about 5 hours away from Namche. The lodge and the village offered us the peace of mind and the quietness which could be a luxury along the EBC trek. We played ping pong with the staffs. The only disadvantage is the WIFI (which works in all the lodges except in Thame as the signal to the valley is constantly obstructed by the mountain.

We found it not only comfortable to stay with Yeti. We also had confidence with their food and water. If we need to second guess about the hygiene and were fearful about getting diarrhoea, it would easily ruin our trek They hire young and passionate people form the village (we met some Rai people) and it is good they provide not only jobs but training to these young people who would have alternatives besides inheriting their family farms or becoming a porter.

Yeti Mountain Home, tara Airline and Thamserku are all related sister business, And hence, we might have been benefited with the priority given and resources shared among their various business arms. Passing Sherpa is definitely the expert to organise any trekking trips in groups or customised form. We gave them a 5 star as what they tried to achieve could be easy in an established city at sea level but probably ten times harder up in the mountain where there is no road and vehicles. We do look forward to coming back this Mountain Home in future.

I missed this Home in the Mountain

Attentive service, pretty good size room with private bath, hot water for shower, electric blanket for bed. Three course meal for dinner, breakfast was porridge, eggs, potatoes. Happy hour with free drinks and snacks before dinner. No heat in room but large wood-fired stove in common area which kept you warm till bedtime. Very quiet at night. Wifi may not reach your room, but it is good in common areas.  They have clothes lines behind building which dry your stuff out pretty good because of the steady winds. Great reading room upstairs to watch the river and people passing on the EBC trail.

My husband and I stayed at YMH in Phakding on the first night of our trek to Namche. The lodging is luxury compared to tea houses or a tent. The rooms are decent size, have comfortable beds and a bathroom with a toilet, shower and sink. This is trekking in the Himalayas so you don't expect much else however we were surprised to find that the rooms are not heated, not even a room heater. And it was very cold. The beds do have electric heating pads which were very warm but it was uncomfortable to get out of the bed. The bathrooms are especially cold and there is not always hot water. Water is heated either by solar or electric but once it's gone there isn't any more until the water tank heats up again. The lodge we were in had a large group staying in it and they used up all the hot water but the staff moved us to another lodge with less people and still had hot water left. I would advise you to bring your own towel (I bought a quick dry one from Amazon which was great), and your own soap. And shower shoes or flip flops. If you must have one the front desk has a hair dryer you can borrow. 
When you arrive you must take off your hiking boots and put on a pair of sandals which are provided. Staff will greet you with a warm towel and hot tea. 
Dinner is served in a central dining area and was buffet some nights and some nights if was served at the table. They have a happy hour from 5:00 - 6:00 and served run punch which is run with hot water, lemon and spices and a basket of popcorn. There is also a small bar which offered some beers. I didn't notice if there were other options available. Note that the rum punch and popcorn or free but a beer is not and was about $8 - $9US. 
Breakfast is served in the same room as dinner and consisted of coffee, tea, juice, a couple kinds of cereal and eggs and toast. 
The wifi doesn't work in the rooms, only the main lodge area. 
Staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was decent. The experience was pleasant, if a bit cold. I recommend YMH if you are looking for a bit more comfort than a tea house.

Comfortable lodge, if a bit cold

We stayed here one night in October. It gets cold at night, but the beds had electric blankets. The food was delicious, especially the soup. There is no heat in the rooms - only in the communal dining hall. If you don't get there early the hot water runs out. Also the electricity is spotty and the lights in the room strobe!
