After a thorough 3-month search through hundreds of hotels/guest houses in the Kathmandu area to host very special adoption family reunion, we finally landed on Summerhill House in Lalitpur.  I cannot say enough great things about this peaceful get-away in the heart of such a busy city!  Beginning with the warm and wonderful owners of these beautiful Newari style inns, it only gets better with the excellent service, ideal location, added services (touring and transportation as needed) and lovely rooms - including common space for hanging out and relaxing.  And, let's not forget the delicious Nepali cooking, the brand new yoga studio and a guarded, gated entrance!  It was the perfect place for us, and for anyone looking for a traditional, yet modern, Nepali experience.  I highly recommend that you book your stay at Summerhill House!

We were a group of 23 who filled the guest house.  We had great service - very professional and accommodating.  Breakfasts are large and delicious - fruit, yogurt, cereal, toast and choice of freshly cooked eggs. The rooms are also large, clean and well furnished. The gardens are lovely and a quiet oasis in the midst of a busy city. Breakfast on the patio is lovely. They are associated with a travel agency as well which makes touring easy.  The owners are very involved, chatting with guests and ensuring our needs were met.  they also have an efficient airport pick up service.

I had the pleasure of staying at Summerhill House on three separate occasions in October 2017. The location in Jawalakhel is just perfect - quirt with a beautiful garden and still within 10 minutes walk to all the new restaurants, cafes and shops in Jawalakhel, which is very fast becoming a good alternative to Thamel. Summerhill House is very well managed - the rooms are spacious, comfortable and clean, and the restaurant  is serving an excellent breakfast. The management and staff are very helpful and serviceminded. A perfect place to stay in Kathmandu and excellent value for money.

I spent 9 days there to recuperate. It was great!

Evidently, since KTM now has 24 electricity, they have upgraded the place. I was in room 11 and it had air conditioning. The room was very nice. The bathroom was excellent with hot water and very big. The WiFi is fast enough for me and always there.

The electricity went out a few times. They have a back up, so a couple of lights stay on in your room. Also, their WiFi router must also be plugged in to the back up power because the internet kept working. Nice touch!

The free breakfast is enormous. I ate their fruits and veggies every day and never got sick. So, they must be safe. (Didn't eat the yogurt or drink the milk, though.)

You must order supper at least 3 hours in advance. They were very good, also. The pasta dishes and fried rice dishes were very good. The mushroom soup is amazing. The chef could open up a mushroom soup shop and there would be a line a couple of blocks long. I would be there every day!

The place is at the edge of the Patan plateau. One road is steep and goes down to Ring Road and restaurant row. I never went down that road. It is about 100 meters of 45 degrees and I didn't want to walk back up. Another road is about 200 level meters to the street. It is a nice walk. At the street is everything you might need: Big Mart, pharmacy, Pizza place, coffee shops, restaurants, wine shop, bakery, taxi stand, and buses, as well as the zillions of little shops you find on any street in KTM.

Finding it can be hard:

1. Get your ride to Big Mart on Ekantuna.
2. Take the road directly across the street and go 200 meters until you get to a 3-way intersection.
3. Behind you on the left is a big black gate. Knock on the gate and drive in.

The 4 great helpers will unload your bags and take them to your room for you.

Cons:

1. Skeeters everywhere! Wear bug repellent.
2. No fridge in room. Cold drinks are rare.

I was in a room on the bottom floor of the secondary building. My room had two beds, no fridge, a fan, and AC. The hotel manager and owner were extremely helpful and friendly during our whole stay. They had plenty of recommendations for where to go for food, shopping, sightseeing, etc. The location of the hotel is great. It's in a quiet neighborhood with a two minute walk away from the bigger street. The hotel has a very comfortable setup where the main building is bnb like and the second building is more hotel like in terms of rooms. The food here is amazing as well!

Rooms are very comfy, spacious and clean. Staff is extremely courteous. Food is good. Breakfast is complementary. Garden is well maintained and  green. The owner is very social with guests. Lane to the property from the main road is dusty and broken. Taking a car to this property will be a bumpy ride. Bad roads are a problem throughout Kathmandu. The only problem we had in this property is that they don't have a card machine to pay for by credit card. Carrying cash is inconvenient for travellers. Other than this i will highly recommend this place for long peaceful stays. It is very near to the marketplace and various eateries in the Ekantakuna area.
