Fantastic
27 reviewsOur first time in Nepal, and we stayed at Goathchen. It was such a good experience - the place itself - clean, traditional and cozy, the location right next to Durbar Square, and the hosts - so generous, that we ended up staying there once again when we passed through Katmandu. The low wooden ceilings, the wooden floors, big beautiful windows, the floor seating, and the very cozy low-rise bed, and the economy of the bathroom - very endearing and grounded - hobbit like Breakfast is shared with great generosity, as was the elaborate Newari dinner we were invited to, along with two of our friends who were staying elsewhere. Even more generous was our host Brijender in sharing his stock of the local Nepali Ruksi. We so enjoyed the Ruksi that we carried some back with us. Infact i enjoyed the ruksi so much that i forgot my phone and passport behind the next morning, much to the irritation of my partner. And Brijender came all the way to the airport to drop them off, making sure we didnt miss our early morning flight to Pokara. Which, as chance would have it, ended up being 2 hours late anyways. Brijender also helped us hire a bike. We rode along with him, on the near empty roads thanks to the Dasai season, as he showed another guest around PasupatiNath and Boudanath. He speaks Nepali, Hindi, English and German, as far as i know. Brijender, thank you for helping us out and sharing your space. Nepal is extremely special. We hope to come back someday. Much love to you and your family. Notes: the wooden stairs are steep. as in most old traditional homes. if you, like us, avoid plastic and bottled water, and drink plenty of water - please discuss it with the host. we initially found the drinking water facility to be limiting. Hoping that a waterfilter appears in the Goathchen courtyard where guests can fill their water bottles, and actively reduce plastic use.
