Shymkent Grand Hotel

Very good rooms -- spacious, quiet, clean -- with good breakfast included in a very reasonable price.  Good location with easy access to and from airport (30 minutes).  Can also get a very reasonably priced meal right next door at the TopChan restaurant (though much is cooked in the morning and just warmed-up through the day) but would avoid again the Madlen restaurant also next door as much is deep fried and greasy and served in a very noisy atmosphere.  Another good pick of restaurants is the Pontos Restaurant about a 10-minute walk away down the Arbat located across the street from the hotel -- excellent meat dishes and service.

I had a very pleasant stay at the Grand Hotel - spacious and comfortable, it was great for a base for my last day in Kazakhstan. The on-site tourist information desk was helpful and I found that the staff couldn’t do enough to help, including preparing a breakfast box as I was leaving at 3:45am the following day, which was impressive as the kitchen staff usually arrived at 4:00. 
The bedroom was quirky with a walk-in balcony that was a real sun trap and the bed was huge. 
Despite being a sprawling city, the Grand Hotel was central to several parks, restaurants and shops. No complaints at all.

An interesting hotel indeed mainly because of the different room combinations. But first the reception / lobby area.
The lobby /entrance area is nothing short of impressive and large. the reception counter is very long and many columns! The bar area is here as well. As we arrived early our rooms were not  ready so time to kill. lunch was therefore taken in a restaurant next to the hotel.
So to the rooms. I had room 406 or 4006. Anyway upon entry to the room I was greeted with an unusual layout. Not what I expected. 2 long thin rooms side by side each about 25 feet long and 12 feet wide!. You come into a small hallway which leads to the left for the bathroom, A very big bathroom comprising a shower which is the width of the room, toilet and washbasin. the shower was very good.The hallway has a smallish coat rack and cupboard. So to the bedroom. This felt funny being so long and narrow.At the far end was the bed which was quite firm and ok. I slept well despite the heat. There is a smallish table and chair on which was a kettle and stuff. There is a TV on the far end wall and not much else. Nowhere to put your luggage except on the floor. Also there is a balcony which for me was good as one is allowed to smoke here. I did and of course made sure that the door to the room was closed. i found myself using the windowsill to put my things on.The room was clean. But a shortage of power points did not help. I found just 2. So a funny experience.
The breakfast room is on the 2nd floor. There was a good selection to suit most tastes. I heard from other members of our group who said they had small showers and some other different room layouts. The stay here was acceptable. The staff were good. There is free wi-fi which was quite fast.

I was staying in room 3005, which shall be counted like a suite. Spacious room with nice bathroom, be informed that there is a shower there. Room was clean. I’ve left clothes for laundry and ironing and received it well served. Hotel is well located. Strongly recommend it.

I was staying there for 2 days. It was pretty cheap (standard room) and clean. Clean linens, restroom and fresh main room. Variative breakfast in choise. Comfortable located. Put it otherwise - worth it. I have often compared prices with hotels in Atyrau (as I was staying there many times) and it is one of the best hotels by price/quality/service. I reccomend.

Nice hotel

This is a worn out hotel and needs renovation. The receptionists are sulky without a tiniest bit of smile. The room is large enough. The breakfast has some varieties but the boiled eggs were freezing cold and fresh coffee was not routinely available. Wi-fi connection is good.
