Our guide was able book us into using the onsens, as they weren't being used by guests, during our recent trip to see the snow monkeys, and we loved it. 

Excellent facilities and friendly staff had us wishing we could have stayed a few nights here. I will definitely be staying here the next time we are in town. 

Highly recommended.

We stayed in a standard room and it was very quiet and comfortable and clean! They made the futon beds for us. We didn't need any heating or air conditioning because the weather was very pleasant. The room itself is very big and spacious. They had a kettle in there with coffee if you wanted. Breakfast and dinner are included in a private area just for the members of your party. And they bring your the courses one by one (I couldn't eat anymore but the food was good).

I'm vegetarian and my husband has food allergies, and they were VERY accommodating of that. The presentation of the food was amazing! I think there can be more variety for vegetarian options but either way the food was very filling and delicious. Couldn't eat lunch because it is so filling! I think one more thing that could have made it better is to teach people like me how to eat certain foods or what exactly it is so we know what to do. But other than that it was amazing. 

The staff were incredibly friendly! Though language was a barrier they were so apologetic that they couldn't speak to us in English but hey, I was in Japan, I should be trying to speak to them in Japanese (not the other way around)! The staff go out of their way to make sure they are making your stay comfortable from the moment you walk in to even after your check out! 

They have their own personal onsen (separate for men and women), but lockers/boxes to keep your stuff, soaps/shampoos/dryers for before/after the onsen. It was so nice and warm and peaceful. They have an indoor and an outdoor one. The outdoor one was amazing because it was cool outside but you're nice and warm in the water. 

The location is perfect! Was very easy to get from Nagano to Yudanaka to the hotel. The hotel is about a 40-45 min walk to the snow monkey park with some uphill walking. or there is a bus you can take as well. we opted to walk which was nice because you get to see different Temples and shrines along the way and you meet a lot of friendly people in the area. Some people invited us to their picnic and sake! 

It was raining on of the days, but the hotel provides you with rain boots if you'd like and umbrellas. They also provide you with kimono's, towels, and Japanese foot wear to wear to the different onsens in the area. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby where everyone was friendly (and I even happened to find vegetarian food outside one day)! 

A gorgeous hotel in a gorgeous location! Would definitely stay again!

Sakaeya - Shibu Onsen
Absolutely lovely hotel and a great Japanese experience 5*
We chose this hotel for its location in the middle of the village, within a reasonable walkable distance from the station and to the Monkey park. The staff were absolutely lovely and the traditional Japanese breakfast and evening meal were superb. Our room was a really large traditional Japanese style bedroom with futons on the floor. It also had plenty of storage space. We had a private toilet, but it didn’t have a shower or bath. However, the hotel’s own Onsen was so close it made using it preferable to using a shower. This was our first experience of using an onsen and it made it our preference whenever available elsewhere. It also had a room where you could sit and paint or have coffee. The monkeys at the park were so much fun that we were there for hours.

This inn/ryokan is a class apart. Everything is beautiful, and perfectly maintained, and the staff are dedicated to making the visitor's stay unforgettable. We had stayed there some two years before - and had loved it then. On this occasion the standards were as impeccable as ever. The lavishly-proportioned guest room (much, much larger than most rooms in Japanese hotels) was the height of comfort and elegance, combining Japanese tatami mats and Western-style beds, with a gracious seating area. The evening dinner ("kaiseki") was as sumptuous and visually delightful as before. The outdoor hot-spring baths ("rotemburos"), one for men one for women, were as relaxing as can be imagined. It was great fun wandering along the picturesque village lane in front of the inn after dinner, our party like everyone else dressed in the provided cotton kimonos ("yukatas") and "geta" slippers, sampling the small and charmingly old-fashioned foot bath not far from the hotel, or looking into some of the rustic public baths to which ryokan customers have access.

Highly recommend a stay at Sakaeya especially if visiting the snow monkeys. Where to start it was all quite amazing! Our room was traditional tatami mat room with separate bathroom (toilet and sink). The public bath at the ryokan was a dream the water was beautiful and hot and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so relaxed followed by the nice yutaka. The town is quite amazing you really feel so relaxed as everything is laidback. We stayed here 2 nights and was not disappointed. Staff were helpful spoke enough English to help and one of the staff (Yoshi I think) was so welcoming helped us to our room and explained everything about the hotel and 9 onsen baths we can visit with key provided. Snow monkeys only 10 minute taxi ride away so happy with our stay!

Exemplary service and the food absolutely blew us away, best food we had during our entire trip to Japan. We had breakfast and dinner there for 2 nights - the first night and morning was particularly good as they were traditional Japanese. The second day was fusion food and though good, less 'wow', as we are from western countries where fusion is done extremely well. Many staff had trouble speaking English however overall a wonderful experience. Would definitely return.
