We have stayed in many places around Japan and this one is at the top of our list.  Great location for Hagurosan and attractions.  Hosts were wonderful, together with breakfast and dinner, top notch, would definitely stay again.

I was a solo traveler going for one night ...The Ryokan is in an excellent location not far from the beginning of the step climb. The owners and are so kind and attentive always ready to assist you but not obtrusive in anyway. ..The room was HUGE and comfortable and the food was amazing !!!... The large soaking bathtub was nice way to unwind after long day ... I really enjoyed my stay there  and would go back again.

For those visiting Dewa Sans and particularly Mt. Haguro, Tamokan is an outstanding location with  generous hosts, delicious food and wonderful traditional accommodations. The property features lovely rooms and unparalled, locally sourced gourmet cuisine cooked by the the 10th generation innkeeper and hostess-mom.   Toki, her son and 11th generation innkeeper (wrap your mind around that!) provided us with excellent recommendations for day trips and his knowledge of the area and local residents certainly opened doors of hospitality when we indicated we were staying at Tamonkan.  Be forewarned that the Tsuruoka area is quite lovely, but definitely not a destination during winter (the snow pole markers were as high as 15 feet and they tuck in the temples and homes for winter with shielding to protect against the elements)  Also, those with limited mobility will find the many stair steps for sites in the area difficult to near impossible to navigate.  The Dewa Sans area is a treasure and Tamonkan one of its gems!

I had such a wonderful stay at this place, I didn't want to leave! Clean, convenient, and comfortable. The food was fantastic and the bed astonishingly comfortable considering it's a Japanese style futon. The hot bath (onsen) in the house was absolutely fantastic - nothing better than to sit and relax in the hot tub after climbing Mt Haguro during the day. 
This is a beautiful, peaceful little Japanese village, where life moves slowly and you can get a real sense of old traditional Japan as it has been for centuries. The forest is absolutely stunning and the walk to the top well worth the 2500 steps. For the price, you cannot possibly beat this place for accommodation. 
I want to thank the owners of Tamonkan for giving me such a delightful experience of traditional Japanese hospitality. And also to their dear friends at the Buddhist temple for taking the time to welcome me into their midst. That was a truly precious experience.

Small, family run traditional inn.  Easy bus access from Tsuruoka station; ten minute walk through a quiet village to the renowned forest path up to Hagurozan, past the magnificent pagoda, of the Dewazan.
Plentiful meals on the very good value DB&B plan. Private ofuro. Helpful staff.
The small tourist office at the station has brochure, map and bus times.
Recommended.
