Onyado Chikurintei

As a Japanese, I still rate this onsen very high among the others. Each room has a different character, we stayed for two nights changing rooms and equally enjoyed(because 2nd night was not available for the 1st). Room is set up beautifully and the small garden and outside bath are well taken care of. At night, don't miss to visit Oshaya bar by the lake. We enjoyed the ambiance and the light projection & installation by Teamlab.

We stayed in Takasago room. This room has a garden and an outdoor (onsen) pool (as in every room in this ryokan). The service and food are impeccable. In addition, this ryokan has a private access to the Mifuneyama Garden, another plus. No wonder it receives top Michelin rating. For foreigners looking for an authetic experience of onsen, this would not disappoint you. Otherwise, please book yourself a hotel (in a city).

Westerners may not appreciate a full true Japanese-style Inn. I loved every element including 畳-flooring, light incense aroma, footwear changes by room, delicious food courses, attentively pleasing focuses  service, and expansive garden with pond and mountain side views.  I was there for one night during a business "tour de force" and will God-willing bring my wife back for a longer weekend in this 佐賀県-paradise.  Nihon daisuki!

This onsen has been visited by various members of the Japanese Royal Family. Perhaps because of that the style of the ryokan is extremely traditional. That applies to the room, the food and the service. The garden and mountain next to the ryokan is very serene. Also drinks by the lakeside after dinner was memorable.

Whilst I appreciate the finesse of the place and really enjoyed my stay, I would seek out more modern onsen establishments which may be more suited to forwigners.

Magnificent garden spa retreat

The rooms and private bath were pretty and comfortable. The service is ok. But if you consider the price you paid, it is not worthy. The meals are so-so. The public bath is so-so. There is no hot spring in the indoor bath in room. If you do not care about the price, you can try it. But if you expect truly exceptional luxury and unforgettable experience, you are likely to be disappointed.
