Stayed 2 nights here as part of a tour included breakfast and kaiseki dinner. It is a bit old and out of town but is also charming and a nice change from western hotels.

Tatami room with futons was comfortable and quiet. Bathrooms downstairs and only one western toilet.

The attached onsen baths are relaxing and recommended after a day of sight seeing.

The food was wonderful and highly recommended.

We had two nights in Takayama, and so decided to stay off the beaten track somewhat. This place was fabulous - very clean, very organised, and some of the best food I had in Japan (it's worth paying the extra to get breakfast included). The rooms are a little basic, but still spacious, and for such a small place the onsen / bathing was very good - they even have an outdoor rock pool! For what we paid, it's amazing value - the owner will even drive you into town every day at 9am (or whenever you need to go catch the train).

Fantastic place, I like it very much. The place is great for Japan culture experience, the only problem is communication in English. Overall ... Satisfied!

I planned to stay one night in the city for visiting the Takayama autumn festival. Since so many people share the same thought, it was hard to find an accommodation. It was fortune that we happened to find this B&B in the takayama official website. 

Weird that we couldn't find any comment related to this B&B in tripadvisor but we decided to give it a try and finally we have no regret on that. The hospitality was super! Yoshikazu san was so considerate to transport us to the autumn festival after dinner. Though this B&B looks tiny, but the room is spacious, the food is great and it has an outdoor onsen! The most fascinating part is that it's a real old japanese building. You can well experience the classic japanese style during your stay.

This B&B is not close to the Takayama station and the sightseeing areas, it takes around 20-30min walk but we are totally fine with that. Yoshikazu san is not only the customer service, he is also the chef and the driver who would offer pick up service and drive us to the station when leaving. If your journey is not too rush, Chogoro would be a great choice for your stay.

We had the pleasure of staying 2 nights at Chogoro. It offers an authentic experience. The place is well known amongst the locals. It's a bit out of the way so be prepared to walk or take taxi. However the owners are so helpful they drove us around several times. While for s Westener, staying in a ryokan is unusual, Chogoro offered a great introduction to this unique style of accommodation.

If you're prepared to dive into a real Japanese hotel alternative then look no further - Chogoro is great.

This a very warm and authentic place to stay if you visit Takayama. The tenants are very dedicated and cook amazing meals. This is a perfect stop in your trip if you are looking for something different than hotels and if you are opened and curious to experiment some Japanese way of life and to sleep in a ryokan.
The rooms are big and clean. One of the two onsens offers a nice external bath with a beautiful night-view on the alpine city. 
The tenants drive you back to the main station at the end of your stay. Very appreciated! 

Stayed here for one night. The room was really nice with authentic Japanese style. The outdoor bathroom was great with an excellent view over Takayama. Note that you can't eat at the restaurant unless you've booked full- or half-board with your room, and it's a 20 minute walk into Takayama.

Giving you an authentic Japanese experience in the history-rich house

We spent 2 nights here and had a really nice stay. The house and the room are really clean and well furnished. There is an onsen in the bath. The food is delicious.The owners are really friendly. I recommend this place.The only thing is that the location is a bit far from the city center so it takes 30min walking to go there. But as the family has a car and are really friendly it is possible to have a ride !

Don't expect luxury - it's a basic Japanese guesthouse with shared bathrooms. Food was fantastic, trying the dinner a must! Shared bathrooms and toilets. Rooms essentially have paper walls... Hot spring baths ok, not more.

Great ryokan with an excellent outdoor bath

The hotel location on Expedia Map and Google Map is wrong.  The hotel is actually 20 minutes taxi away from the train station, not within walking distance from the train station.  We went to the location on the map which is a private house.  We were lucky that a nice Japanese lady came to our rescue and called the host for us. He came and picked us up.  There is no restaurants within walking distance from the hotel; the host was nice enough to drop us off for dinner.  We had to spend extra taxi fare returning from dinner and to the train station the next day, $10USD each way.I booked the hotel because it seems to be close to the train station and neighboring shops and restaurants based on Expedia map. Expedia should update their map. It is misleading. The hotel and host are nice.  It is a bit old, but clean with an indoor and outdoor onsen.
