We stayed at Hatoguruma Kawabata for about a week in early March 2019. We used to live in Japan so have a lot of experience staying at minshukus, ryokans etc. We loved our stay at HK for many reasons (the hospitality of Midori mostly) but the food was incredible. It's pretty hard to find vegetarian options let alone full meals in Japan, especially in the countryside. Each day the food was varied and absolutely delicious. If you've never had Japanese food in Japan, I'd highly recommend HK. The rooms were specious and clean and we'd definitely stay there again next time we're in Nozawa Onsen.

Traditional Japanese style accommodation with a great sized room, close to the lift/gondola.  The host is absolutely lovely.  The Japanese vegetarian breakfast each day was amazing!  We would stay here again and recommend.

Stayed here three nights and were really looking forward to trying a real Japanese style room. The first two nights were slightly uncomfortable just getting used to sleeping on the thin mattresses on the floor but bythe third night we both had a great sleep. The lady that runs the hotel is very friendly and helpful where she can be. Language barriers. Closely located to to the chairlift that takes you up to one of the gondolas on the mountain. 

Absolutely loved it!  The room was great, the food was absolutely incredible and the staff were the nicest people we've met our whole trip.  Fantastic place for vegetarians - we had breakfast and dinner included with our booking and every meal was a huge spread of delicious vegie Japanese food, including tofu and soy meat.  Short walk to the chair lift that takes you right to the hikage gondola.  I can't recommend this place enough!

2 older couples stayed here for 7 nights to do some skiing in Nozawa. Both rooms were quite spacious and in Japanese style tho one room, 301 had 2 single beds with a sitting area and a tatami area with Japanese style table and low chairs. The rooms has aircon and a very effective gas heater for winter. Most other rooms were spacious enough and had tatami mats and futons. none have fridges but in winter the window boxes doubles as fridges; otherwise you could use the owners fridge for small items. Storage space is limited. It is an older style ryokan but clean and comfortable and has WiFi in the main area and most rooms can get access too. There is a drying area for wet ski gear and a washing machine for Yen200 a go. There was a dryer but was broken-the drying room did the trick though. The best bit is that the ryokan is situated between to close by onsen; the Shun-Yu and the Kamitera-Yu. Maybe a 2 minute walk. Most of the onsen are used and maintained by local people and are free. There is a box outside for donations which are used to maintain all the towns public onsens. Also this place is only about a 5 min walk to the Shin-Yu Pair chairlift (# 16) which connects you to the main Hikage Gondola. This is a much better option for this ryokan than the Moving Walkway. The Shin-Yu is also used to bring you down.
But best of all it is run by a delightful couple, who speak little English. Communication is some English and our little bit of Japanese and some mime so it made for some good laughs on both sides. They were so friendly and helpful and really made you feel part of their family. I was unable to grasp their names correctly but sounds like she is called Midori Ko and he Show Hay. Breakfast each morning was Japanese and was slightly different each day. It is all vegetarian with fresh local produce and cooked soy products. Bit dubious at first but fears were unfounded as breakfast really set you up for the day. We did not have dinner there as we always prefer to eat out. All in all the four of us came to really like the place from the first day and it felt like we were coming home each afternoon. Yes it's a bit dated and without all the 5 star amenities but for the price it was great. There are more ritzy places around Nozawa if you prefer that. We don't need ritz!
