Lodge Ueno Ski

This was my first visit to Nozawaonsen. Our hosts were very kind, attentive, and helpful. Check in and check out were hassle free. We rented skis at the lodge. They gave us advice when we asked for it. We dined in when it suited and dined at one of the close by restaurants other days. The onsen next door was a welcome respite each day after skiing. I thoroughly recommend Lodge Ueno Ski.

This was a fantastic place to stay, right in the centre of Nozawaonsen. 

In response to other negative reviews - a few things to consider:

- Nozawa isn’t a cheap place to stay in peak season. Lodge Ueno Ski offers an incredibly affordable place to stay right in the centre of town, and 5 minute walk to the slopes. 
- It’s not a western style hotel, but a ryokan with futons, tatami floor etc. Many ryokans are vastly more expensive than Ueno
- Yes, it’s a shared bath like all other ryokan establishments in Japan. And like other ryokans, there are always set times when you can use them. The bath isn’t the fanciest, but is totally adequate. The public Onsen is 2 steps next door, open all day and night, and a perfect way to experience a bit more Japanese culture
- we didn’t have dinner hear, but had a fantastic, and very reasonable Japanese breakfast in the lovely tatami room.
- don’t expect front desk service whenever you need it, but the proprietor, Tashio, was always available and helpful and friendly. 

I would have no hesitation in staying here again. 

Lodge Ueno Ski is a centrally-located ryokan that is a 1 minute walk from the main street and a 5 minute walk to the slopes. It is run by a lovely Japanese family that are very welcoming and helpful in all respects.

A few things to note, it is a traditional ryokan, which means you sleep on tatami matts (but they cater for Westerns by giving you two tatami matts - which makes it very comfortable!) in beautiful little Japanese rooms with (in our room in any case) views out over the mountain. There is heating in each room, which kept us very warm and shared bathrooms on each level (a western style toilet is available on the ground floor).

A real highlight of this ryokan was the traditional meals - we'd strongly recommend ordering breakfast each morning (available from 8am, either Western or Japanese style), which was the best breakfast we'd had in Japan, and also dinner, which was almost degustation with many little beautifully presented dishes. Easily the best Japanese dinner we had in all of Japan.

All in all we loved our stay at Lodge Ueno Ski and have recommended it to many of our friends!

At first, I'm little bit worried about this lodge, because the review of this hotel on this site. But after I saw directly, this is nice place to stay. With kotatsu table to warm your leg in living room, a nice and cozy japanese tatami room, futon bed, plus the owner is very helpfull. He run ski rental and of course the price is good! The toilet is western toilet with bidet, and sentou style bathroom.

Next time I'll stay in this lodge again plus try the food. Another traveler said that food is delicious!

Truths and myths 

Both good and bad...
Location is great, within short distance from both village center and ski gondola.
There is a local (very hot!) Onsen next doors. Perfect after a full days skiing up the mountain!
Other things are not in place... Heating in room is basic. Once we got it running it works, but there are buttons missing on heater, and no info whatsoever in English on how to operate...
Some bedlinnen had spots, and towels not exchanged during a four nights stay...
Price is ok for what you get, but this would not be my first choice on another stay in Nozawa Onsen...
