Our first experience in a Japanese style inn, in fact  a Shukubo, which forms part of the temple lodging. We loved every aspect of it, the rooms the communal baths as well as the meal experience which was fantastic. The atmosphere was very special

The Tokugyobou is a Shukubo, or temple lodging, and provides a fantastic experience for anyone visiting the Buddhist Temple.  Get up early (around 6.30am) and go up to the Temple to witness the arrival of the priest and possibly receive a blessing.
Rooms are traditional and atmospheric.   Nice and cosy despite all the snow!  I loved staying here.

This was our first taste of three local Japanese inn's. Set in a beautiful, authentic side street in Nagano. Located a short walk from, numerous stores and the incredible Zenkō-ji Buddhist temple. Bathroom facilities are shared. There is a sizable onsen to relax in after a long day of walking. brace yourself for the heat, then relax!

I loved my stay here and enjoyed every moment. 

Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the owner and served tea before dropping our bags in our rooms. The rooms are basic, but I feel that added to the charm of this lovely Shukubo. I thought the decoration was beautiful and in keeping with the traditional feel. The futon was probably the thinnest I slept on while in Japan, but I've slept on much thinner camping mats, so getting a good nights sleep wasn't an issue for me. 

The bathing facilities are single sex shared onsens, which I loved, but some of my group were a little shy and didn't feel comfortable getting naked in front of strangers. But if an onsen isn't your thing there are a row of shared sinks you can wash in.

Just about all of the shops and restaurants in the temple complex close around 5.30pm, but if you head back down towards the train station there are plenty of restaurants and bars for those that don't wish to be in bed by 6pm!

We woke early the next morning for a guide of the complex prior to joining the monks for morning prayers. Our guide was unavailable that morning, so instead we were given a tour by one of the High Priests, what a privilege and amazing experience that was! After being blessed by another High Priest we entered the temple and were mesmerised by the monks chanting. We then returned to Tokugyobou for a hearty traditional Japanese breakfast.

I have nothing but love for this gorgeous little Shukubo. Staying here is a once in a life time opportunity, don't miss out!

We came here as a group and it was my first stay in traditional Japanese lodgings. I was impressed and the staff were very friendly. The vegetarian breakfast was nice and filling, although I struggled to sleep on a futon the first time! We were very close to Zenkoji temple and the staff gave us suggestions of where to visit in the local area. My room was on the ground floor but keep in mind that the walls are very thin... if your neighbour snores you will hear them!
