We went on an arranged trip. The coach dropped us off at the bottom of Vesuvius and we walked the 30 minutes uphill to get to the top. Pace yourself! It’s not an easy walk to the top although I noted there were a lot of older people doing it (50s, 60s and even 70s!) I was impressed so no need to cop out. When you get to the top it’s all worth it to see inside the crater which was smoking. It was a great experience. There are a few little shops up there selling bits made from lava.
