We absolutely loved this place!! Niko was the best Host. The area around was our favorite in all of Crete! We will be back!

Totally authentic experience on the outskirts of Elounda!  Across from an excellent restaurant!

We stayed in the Monestary last June with our daughter and her 3 friends.  We loved it so much we came back in October (just the two of us) and stayed at another Traditional Homes of Crete Property - Argyros House.   These are typical traditional properties, both the houses we have stayed in are amazing architecturally with exposed stonework and cretan furnishings.  If you like boring perfection in places where you could be anywhere in Europe then these properties are not for you.  If however, like us, you like to really feel you are in Crete then The Traditional Homes of Crete are perfect.  We're going back on August 1st with our daughter to stay in Erato where we will have exclusive use of the pool, and then in September we are back to Argyros House where the sea view is out of this world.

about villa Margarita - really astonishing. It was full of stories you could feel from figures like the legendary director Nikos Kundouros, American ambassadors and Scandinavian royalty. The decoration too. We are not talking about mass produced retro-looking objects but real antiques simply lying around the house or serving their useful everyday purpose. It has a huge veranda with the most amazing sea view. We spent most of our time there. You can simply tell this house has been designed by people who know the good life. There is a second fully equiped kitchen (as well as BBQ) in the veranda so you can have your breakfast, dinner or party without missing out on the view and company. The owner, Mrs Argiro was very kind, relaxed and helpful.

Wi-Fi was down the entire time we were there. Not a huge deal but this was never disclosed to us until we asked. Seems like some information we could have be told up front. Bathroom was definitely not cleaned before our arrival. House is overall tired and needs some basic attention.  Lots of lights that don’t work, shower was pretty dirty. Definitely more “rustic” than “traditional”The property is beautiful and we did enjoy our stay, just wish it was cleaner.

Nice but different place to stay. Old home made by stones. Little bit exiting place to be... wonderful scenery from the balcony. Bathroom was clean but the shower was not so good.

But good experience. Romantic too.

Arrival was disastrous. We had notified the contact that we would arrive at 5:30 pm, which we did, and were asked to wait outside the big church - no problem so far. After 3 increasingly angry phone calls we were finally met at almost 7 pm and led up to the property through very narrow and steep lanes. While the house is very rustic and charming, the bathrooms were not very clean. Beds were very clean and comfortable. The house is on 3 floors with steep steps, with the kitchen at the very top of the house. Superb views from the erraces, and the village itself is lovely. We were taken to The Hope taverna (almost next door) where the proprietress explained that the owner was actually in hospital in Athens and the person who was supposed to meet us had forgotten because there had been damage to her house in the earthquake that happened earlier in the day. Why this had not been communicated earlier we don't know. We were offered a free dinner to compensate for the chaotic arrival, and it was absolutely delicious, served by our charming hostess. I was lucky and slept very well in the downstairs bedroom; my friend in the bedroom above the (extremely small!) swimming pool was woken 3 times in the night by the pool cleaning itself - the noise and vibration from this was dreadful. I would not go back to this property.

Pretty house, great views, but not recommended

I stayed at Penelope Traditional stone house as one of five people for a week. We arrived after midnight and were welcomed by owner who gave us a bottle of water and 4 pieces of fruit. it would have been nice to have had a basic food pack given the lateness of our arrival. We couldn't find any cutlery, and eventually located it in a warped shut drawer in the table. By sliding my arm in from behind I managed to get a few items out. We were instructed to ask the maid if we required anything, but she didn't speak any English, so we couldn't communicate what we wanted. Our toilet paper bin was emptied once during the week- We had to see to it the rest of the time. Not very acceptable when 5 of us were using it!! The rubbish was disposed of once during the week. There was no washing machine, or Iron as stated. The property was grubby, I had to clean the base of my reading lamp which was black with dust and grime, and had to dust shelves before use. Taps were wonky and the toilet seat was broken, fittings tired and generally needed some TLC. The up side is the lovely attractive building with it's original features, and it's location/views. The pool was also good. For £1.000 for the week, I don't think it is value for the money.

Too basic.

Did not get the sea view that we had booked, the owner said you have a view yes Hills!!! Good location for food and drinks and a short walk away from the beach. No guarantee you will get what you booked. 

Sea View??? 

Not so good.The land lord was very hard to locate so hard that four locals saved the day and found the land lord for us after 45 minutes of telephone calls. To make matters worse my wife had phoned him 48 hour earlier to confirm our arrival. There was no hot water for a shower.The picture for Homes of Cretan Tradition bears no resemblance to the accommodation offered. Definitely no swimming pool.Words to the wise :-If you are driving make sure your car is very small as the roads are very narrow and the roads very steep.Ask if there is hot water?Ask for pictures of the exact place they are offering you. Ask for exact details of how you contact the landlord, where you will meet him and at what time.My Wife was very disappointed.Once we finally contacted the land lord he was helpful but not informative about the area.The local towns people were fantastic and very helpful and saved the whole situation.
