1434 reviewsArrived later than planned due to delays at Birmingham airport. Lovely lady on reception, very welcoming. Explained the layout of the hotel, times for breakfast and showed us to our room. We had been upgraded which was a lovely surprise. The four poster bed was quite possibly the most comfortable we have encountered outside of the uk. The rooms are a decent size, well furnished and spotlessly clean, although a few more coat hangers would be a welcome addition. The hotel itself is beautiful, in a lovely quiet but central to Akrotiri village location. All private and shared areas are spotless, which for a windy and very dusty island is no mean feat. Breakfast is good, with the usual continental offering plus Greek yoghurt, honey and pastry’s. If you are hoping for a full English this is not the hotel for you. The staff throughout the hotel are fantastic, so friendly and welcoming. There is a small travel agency on site where you can book excursions and Mr Kostas owner and hotel manager is very knowledgeable. As this was our 12th visit to the island we didn’t book any trips, however the solo traveller in the room next to us booked the sunset catamaran and was blown away by the experience so it’s well worth considering what is on offer. The pool was lovely and I had it to myself most days, no claiming of sun beds and plenty available at all times. There is a bus stop right outside of the hotel that will take you to the archeological site of Akrotiri or Thira where you can change buses for an onward journey to Oia, Kamari, Perissa etc. I would definitely recommend hiring a car or a quad bike if you are a confident driver as you will be able to visit areas not easily accessible by public transport, alternatively I believe Kostas can arrange a vehicle with a driver for a reasonable price. There is a shop next door for the essentials and a few restaurants in walking distance. Having previously stayed in Perissa, we found Akrotiri to be far more authentic and very relaxing. Finally I would like to say a big thankyou to Kostas and all the staff at Mathios village for making our stay very enjoyable. Fingers crossed we will return next year ❤️
