5 out 5 very nice staff, nice pool, tasteful breakfast and very good mattresses at the bedrooms! Highly recommend it! A very good choice for two stars hotel, only five minutes away from the bus station and the supermarkets and ten minutes away from the port of pigadia!

Iolkos Hotel is located at the centre of Karpathos, Pigadia, and is about 5 minutes far from the harbour, tavernas, bars and the bus station. The room was big and very clean, with a balcony with sea view and very clean. Every day they changed our towels an sheets!Great breakfast for all tastes with bread, cheese,turkey,jam,butter,cake or traditional yogurt and honey and also fresh fruits.The staff were willing to serve our wishes at any time!

a nice quiet hotel.nice staff okey breakfast with coffee tea ..boiled eggs,sandwhiches ,cereal excetra.. help full kind staff.. would go back again,although the hill from the center is a task unless you like training, but taxis arent expensive and worth it

I was 1 week in this hotel with my familly. Nice clean hotel, we get room with beautiful view of the bay. The swimming pool was big and nice. the location good close to shops and beaches. Drawback for us were monotonous breakfasts, lunchmeat,cheese, jam, artificial honey, yogurt, eggs, bread, orange juice, tea, coffie.

First visit to Karpathos and Hotel Iolkos

Clean hotel close to shops and beaches

I spent 5 nights at Iolkos in late July 2021. It wasn’t my first choice, I booked it last minute after other options became unavailable. I was looking for somewhere affordable (< €50 per night) that included breakfast, preferably with a pool, was close to the centre of Pigadia and not too far from the beach – Iolkos seemed to tick the right boxes.

Well, after walking to the hotel from the ferry, I can say it’s not that close to the centre of town! The hotel is situated on a steep hill, so beware if you’re planning to walk from the port, it’s a sweaty one! Likewise from the beach, or anywhere during the day really. However, it’s close to the bus station and a supermarket (opposite the bus station) so that’s a bonus.

The room itself was fine, with a small balcony overlooking the side of the hotel, functional air-conditioning etc, although the bathroom wasn’t great: the shower head leaked water from the hose connection, so the flow of water was difficult to wash with. There was also no shower curtain so the entire floor would get quite wet and slippery.

The worst part was probably breakfast. It’s hard to expect too much for under €40 a night, but even so, the selection was minimal: sliced bread (no toaster), cheap ham and cheese slices, a small selection of salad, awful Greek yoghurt (worst I’ve tasted) and some biscuits which turned out to be the most edible thing on offer. Most mornings I just had a few biscuits, coffee and a slice of bread with some butter. They didn’t even have water unless you asked for it.

The pool is quite nice but small and with only enough sunbeds for perhaps a dozen people. I used it a couple of times but it’s not that spacious so even a few other people around made it feel crowded and noisy. The main beach is about 15 minutes walk away and a much better option.

I’ve given a generous 3 stars as it was cheap. Had I paid more it would have been 1 or 2* for sure and I would only stay here if you can’t find anything else or you’re on a really tight budget.

Okay for the price but not great

Despite the fact that this is a two star hotel, it has a perfect location close to the sea (10 minutes walk), the bus station (5 minutes walk) and to the dining area (15 minutes walk). Make sure you book a room facing the sea. Those facing the mountains are not nice at all. For some reason the hotel management tried to have me change room the first evening. From room 303 with great view, to a room facing the mountains. I was very upset. However, I refused to go from good to bad and they let me keep the room. Breakfast “buffet” was extremely boring and meager, which is good in a way since I tend to eat too much breakfast if it is tasty. Also, keep in mind the hotel is located on a high hill. It is a sweaty walk during summer. But then again – good exercise! I recommend this hotel if you are not planning to rent a car or a motorbike. Please note, Wi-fi only in the reception. Nice pool but small slippery ladders.

Perfect location with beautiful balcony view

Ideal for those who do not require as much of either sleeping comfort, constantly hot water or personal service. However - experienced Greece fanatics can probably agree on that the first two mentioned is pretty rare in a 2-star hotel in Greece.

The hotel employees were helpful when you asked but they made no extra effort to ensure your comfort during the stay. If you require to be treated like a princess during your stay this is not your hotel. 

The rooms were OK and clean and the pool was nice. 

And one more thing, do not come here if you have knee problems - steep hills.

Over & out

In Iolkos we lived after the season. Breakfast each day were identical and very simple, so there was nothing to look forward to. The rooms were relatively clean, with plenty of space, I just criticized the gap between insane double beds, where every night I was falling (see photo). For a fridge is charged 3-5 € per day, which would not matter. But the lady at the front desk forgot to tell that to fridge to operate even in your absence in the room, it should be involved in a single outlet that does not turn off with your departure ... Access staff appreciate more as lax.
Wifi is available in the hotel lobby.
However, everyone else on this beautiful island is very courteous, helpful and friendly, we had a really wonderful week there. The kitchen is excellent and huge servings of fresh food is almost impossible to eat, so for meals (except Iolkos) Set aside enough time;)

Average hotel with excellent access

Overall, it's worth to pay a little extra for a better hotel.
+The man who is in reception at evening/night is lovely
+They are friendly to the cats 
+Location is ok (the hill is REALLY steep)
-No electrical outlet avaliable by the bed, only one outlet avaliable in the entire room (it's at the opposite side of the bed) if you want the fridge. We skipped the fridge to have two outlets, and also used the one meant for the TV (on vacation you may want to charge 2xphones, headphones, powerbar)
-AC was broken for 6 nights, with water and shards of ice falling IN MY FACE at night. They had it repaired 3 days in a row, and the receptionist lady laughed when we told her about it. We only got 2 days free of charge, even though they for sure knew about at least the 3 days of repairs (aka 3 nights malfunction). Picture is of ice on the bed, where my pillow normally was. Pieces of ice like this, and drizzling cold water woke me up constantly.
-Wifi sucked.
-Breakfast is ok, but very limited. They used the same utensils for meat and cheese (big no-no for vegetarians). The cucumber smelled and tasted horrible. When they were out of coffee (far before 9.30) and we asked about it, they laughed and said "Finished" instead of apologizing (which we would understand and be ok with).
-Really hard/uncomfortable beds, and the blankets felt unhygenic.
-Bathroom overflowing when showering
-The poolbar non-existing, to reach the pool you exit through a messy room which used to be a bar-area but is now a weird room with some gym stuff in it.
-Very few options for shadow by the pool
-Steep hill to get there, we mostly took the dirt road to the left of the hotel when exiting instead.
-Aside from the older gentleman, the staff really was not that friendly.

Would not visit again

If you like elevators that don’t work and staff that doesn’t care about guests then this is the hotel for you. As others have noted this hotel is rather a hike up the hill which is another reason to choose other hotels in Pigadia. To be fair, the hotel rooms do have decent bathrooms by Greek standards.
