Had a great experience staying and Pension Engel with Johannes. The region is spectacular, and this hotel is centrally located to a number of major attractions. Staying in this small town was a great choice for us, and perhaps less expensive than the main tourist towns down the road.

Checking into the hotel was super easy. Johannes helped with some restaurant recommendations nearby which turned our really great.

The room quality was fine and a nice view of the alps. Basic fitout in a three bed room, but very comfortable for our family for one night. At this low price we were happy.

Breakfast was great. Good selection of cereal and breads with some regional cheeses. Top work there!

Lastly, Johannes gave us some excellent guidance for places to visit in the region. This proved to be spot on and we really got the most out of our time there. 

Overall - I would recommend staying there for anyone going to this amazing region.

I stayed here recently for one night, on the way to Neuschwantstein castle. First of all, the ticket line for the castle opens at 8:00 am., so you should try to go early, otherwise you'll be waiting in line for a while (the English tours are only at set times). I got to the ticket booth at 9:00, got tickets by 9:40, and the next English tour was 12:35 (tour was 40 minutes). Note: if you stay at this place, there is a 4 Euro discount off the castle (the ticket lady told us, the workers at the pension did not tell us, maybe because we got there so late or because they forgot).  So, we wanted to stay close by and get to the castle "early".  The pension was nice, we stayed in a 4 person apartment with two rooms.  We arrived with 5 people, and they were cool with that (they didn't make a big stink).  Breakfast was also very good. The drive to the castle was about 10-15 minutes.  
With regard to the air conditioning comment in the previous review, I did not see air conditioning (not sure if it's available), but it was pretty cool at night with the windows cracked open. Overall,a positive experience, and would stay here again, and also recommend to my friends.

Great choice for region

Good place to stay, close to the castles

I found this smal pension in Hopferau via Booking.com and reserved the apartment under the roof at 1AM the day of the check-in for 130 Euros per night with breakfast included. Seems to be overpriced but considering the short term and the high season, it was an acceptable option compared to other hotels/pensions in an area of 15 km around the Schloss Neuschwanstein.
The rooms were very basic and clean, with a kitchenette but very hot and there was no air conditioning.
As a stop-over it was good and it would also be good for longer stays but at lower price.
The host was really nice and friendly, speaking English and giving us hints about places around, including the spring where you could cool down your feet or playground for children.

Basic but nice place to stay

This small family run hotel is in Hopferau, a little town approximately 15 minutes drive from Fussen and 25 min. from the castles.  We found this place as a last minute option via Booking. com. We paid 104 Euros per night for a quadruple room which seemed way overpriced for this type of accomodation . The hotel is your very basic gasthof, no frills. The room was big and clean and had a small kitchenette. The bathroom was clean but I was somehow disappointed by the worn out  towels provided. Right outside the back door in a corner facing the parking lot there were some old chairs and tables but seemed to be in a state of abandon.  The host were very nice and helpful and spoke English. One of the host took the time to tell me a little about the area and gave me some suggestions on the sites to visit, which I appreciated very much.The breakfast was included and offered a selection of coffe/tea/hot chocolate, ham & cheese, boiled eggs, several kinds of bread, jam, cream cheese, chocolate spread, and a cake. The breakfast room is spacious with a nice view on the town park and castle. For what I understood the hotel had a warm kitchen/restaurant but closed at 9 pm. Free wireless internet in the room. Private parking. No elevator. Not sure about air conditioning. No kids activities or playground. No yard.
Personally I think that this pension is OK for a stopover but not for an extensive stay due to the lack of facilities available for guests both at the hotel and in the small town.

Basic and overpriced

Rooms are ok, a little bit old, tv makes strong noise, for dinner you must search other than this because they dont serve dinner, breakfast is royal en vey fresh and good! Ideal for short stay. Town isnt very great, bathroom is ok but not of high standards, cleaning ok.
