We stayed one night in this isolated area and had dinner. Given the fact that we were the only clients the owners created a table for us in front of the nice open fire. The quality of the à la carte dinner was high and the pigeonneau and the tarte tatin de poires were superb.  The white wine ( Sancerre ) was very special and the red Bourgogne was good.
The service was very friendly and the breakfast next day was a big positive surprise as well. Just one remark; the prices for the dinner ( € 215,-- ) and the room € 140,-- were absolutely too high.

The first thing to say is that if you are on a strict, limited budget and prefer eating burgers and pizzas, don't bother to read this review; l'Orée du bois is not for you. If, however, you appreciate fine service, excellent classic French cuisine and comfortable accommodation then you might enjoy this hotel/restaurant. 
The first sight of what look like holiday cabins set around the main house on the edge of woodland is slightly daunting but believe us, they are super comfortable and well designed: ours had a huge bathroom with a walk-in shower as well as a settee (rather impracticably!).
We had aperitifs in the lounge in front of a glowing fire (perked up occasionally by champagne corks soaked in alcohol!). A lot of Brits stay here it seems and there was friendly chat before the meal.
The meal was superb; it was mushroom season so we started with ceps. I had de-boned quail (fiddly or what?) and my companion had lamb followed by fine desserts. We had an off-the-list pinot noir. Excellent and friendly service from the owner and his wife (who speak good English).
Recommended, traditional French comfort and cuisine.

Excellent food and service, but overpriced

A good experience

The hotel is extremely convenient and very peaceful, both ideal for overnight stops en route to other parts of France or Germany and beyond. Our room in the converted barn was clean, comfortable and surprisingly cool given the heat of the day. The views from the room were of green fields and forest. 
The evening dinner menu is limited given the establishment's marketing as a restaurant more than a B & B. My filet steal was beautifully cooked and very tasty, but could have benefited from more substantial accompaniments. My wife, not hungry, had a simple artichoke salad. The food is good but very overpriced in my opinion. 
Breakfast was very good and included a variety of meats, cheeses, bread, yogurt, fruit etc and was included in the room price. That room price at €155 was expensive again in my opinion. 
A comfortable, peaceful, well situated stop over or base for visiting this area of France, but let down somewhat by unrealistic prices for the overall experience. 

We have been using L'Oree du Bois as a stop off for trips to Northern France, Germany and Switzerland for over ten years. We have finally lost patience with the ridiculous and unseemly charges that spoil a very good hotel. The good points are the supremely quiet and relaxing forest setting, the well furnished but simple rooms with excellent showers and the ambience of the restaurant. However the restaurant is exorbitantly expensive for the food offered. The menu has barely changed in the ten years, and is typical out of date French (except for the good deserts).  Snails as an amuse bouche, Ris de Veau, Rognons and pigeon are cliches of French cooking, and at around €30 per dish, too expensive. A half bottle shown on the wine menu at €27 appears as €32 on the bill, small helpings of cheese cost €15 and tiny flutes of undistinguished champagne cost €15. The room rate of €135 looks good until you add breakfast (€15) and realise that eating anywhere else is unfeasible owing to the hotel's isolation. Service is good and the patron  and patronne are pleasant and helpful. If you can avoid the perception that overcharging is deliberate, and you like classical French cooking rather than modern, then we can recommend a visit.

Good facility let down by restaurant prices

AVOID THIS PLACE, its silly, 26 euro for a thin slice of pate, 26 euro for uncooked tart tatin,  and , my Tubot was uncooked solid mass, sent back and returned looking like dog vomit, the sauce had congealed. I did not dine and had to watch my wife eat a very good steak, little else on the plate , 35 euro.
The room is functional , cheap bed, chair and table and green carpet tiles 10 plus years old, had to sit in the bath and hold the shower.
The turbot was not on the bill but, it was still 356 euro for a second rate farm type building in the middle of fields.
I am all for peace and quite and country settings but, no one likes being.......
