Haltinmaa Cottages

Stayed at a house called Karhunpesä after 5 days of hiking. Had one of the three bedrooms, and access to sauna, kitchen and small dining room shared with 2 other rooms. Paid 60 euros for a room (did not pay for breakfast or bedlinen since we had sleeping bags and made our own meals in the kitchen) The house was new and room was spacious and spotless, got a free ride from the reception to the house (about 1 km). Affordable, clean, comfortable stay, recommended! 

Excellent hospitslity. All was ready for group arrival even cleaning time was short! Excellent food and they waited buffer open when we arrived with group later than usual open time! 
Coming from Norway you can spend your rest of nok there and rest in euro. 

Spent 2 nights in one of the smallest rooms in a separate building with shared kitchen and bathroom, close to the main building and restaurant in 2017. This year I stayed 2 nights in a slightly bigger room in a separate building named Karhunpesä almost 1 km away from the main area, toward the hill Salmivaara. Shared kitchen and bathroom as well, just a little bit more space and unfortunately too far away from the restaurant but nice day hiking possibility close by.

Our stay here was really nice. Cabin (actually it is small house) was nice, cozy and comfortable to stay in. Location is wonderful. But it is not so difficult to be near everything in Kilpisjarvi. There are 110 inhabitance there. We had good equipped kitchen, hot sauna, beautiful views from the window and homelike fireplace. The nearest and the only shop has really good range of food and drinks. If I am in KIlpisjarvi I will stay there again.

We did not have internet from the very beginning and it took almost day to sort it out. Notice that you have to buy bedclothes. 10 Euro per one item. Manager speaks poor English, restaurant and bar was not working but it was not real problem because across the road we found a place where people ready to feed us and answer our question. I really thankful to people who are working in Tundrea for their help and tasty national food.

Nice and somewhat affordable accommodation in the southern part of Kilpisjärvi

Group stay

We stayed at Haltinmaa for two nights on our way to Norway. The small cabins were nice for a short stay but if I stayed longer I would choose a cottage with a better view and more privacy. 

The location was very good, the Saana fell and the hiking trails were near. Also the Norway border was about 10 km away. We were tropiclandia travelling with kids so we appreciated the playground but it would have needed a little more maintenance and it was not totally safe for kids.

Good for a short stay

Haltimaa cabins are adequate for up to 4 people, with 2 smallish bedrooms, a small living room, a tiny travel TV and a simple but workable kitchenette; a very small electric sauna, shower and toilette facilities. This is basically all you need for a short stay, but do not expect any log cabin type of Northern experiences at this place. The cabins are built in a dense camping-like group, and the site has no landscaping or nature views, so you will probably be watching a parking place or a neighbors's wall from your window.

As a base to outside activities, going to Norway and so on, this guesthouse is workable; the only Kilpisjärvi market is at walking distance, also a smallish restaurant/coffee house. Our visit was in summer, so I cannot comment on winter activities. You have a 50 km one-way distance to Skibotn (Norway) on a good blacktop road, and driving further from Skibotn towards Alta a  10-25 km distance you will find several roadside sites for rod fishing which you can easily do in a day trip from Kilpisjärvi.  In resume, this place is OK as a "base camp" but for vacationing I would probably try to find something more fancy to justify the long drive to North.
