Hostal Otavalo Prince

Stayed here for 2 nights while in Otavalo. Room was clean, a bit small but fine for the two of us. Bed was comfy. Bathroom was new & clean.  Water pressure was good, temperature was a little more than warm. Loved the balcony and sat out on it taking in the sites & sounds of the city. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was tasty & had great views. Including bread with butter & jam, hot water & milk with powdered cocoa & fresh ground coffee to add, scrambled eggs, & juice. Very filling. The staff was nice.  We were actually charged $15 under what the booking site quoted us. Eveo

The title says it all!  This hotel is located one block from the main square in Otavalo, and about 5 blocks from the heart of the world famous indigenous market.  Classy rooms with lots of wood finishing add to the ambience.  Small balconies are still large enough to sit and enjoy the fresh air.

Enjoy breakfast on the top level with glass ceiling open to the surrounding area.  Take a drink and sit up there at night, and enjoy the stars.

If staying in Otavalo, make sure to be there for a Saturday.  The indigenous market spreads to cover dozens of square blocks.  Streets are closed as vendors set up and show off their products.  Do bargain ... it is expected.  The hotel is close enough to drop stuff off so that you are not carrying your purchases all day.

If you are looking for some finer dining, Mi Otavalito on Sucre, between the hotel and the market, is worth the time and cost.  If you like peppercorn steak, the pepper steak is great.  The chicken in wine and mushroom sauce was also note worthy.  All the plates that went by looked equally appetizing. 

Make sure to visit the vegetable market as well, with its unique 'food court'.  Take the time to walk the streets.  It is a truly refreshing experience.

Take a bus at the main terminal to visit Cotacochi.  It is only $0.25, and takes about 20 minutes to get there.  All is within walking distance of the bus terminal in both towns.

Great location, clean, & comfy.

Truly a Hidden Gem in the Heart of Otavalo

We stayed here for 3 nights.

The room is quite modern and comfortable.
I would recommend asking for a top floor room away from the street which is what we had otherwise it is very noisy.
It is also a great location, just 1 block away from 1 town square, which has a beautiful little park, church and government buildings that are all lit up beautifully at night.
and is only about a 5 min walk to the main square Ponchos, where the markets and restaurants are.

The staff are nice but speak NO ENGLISH!
they did help us with organising an airport transfer after about 30 mins of Google Translate.

Also have cash if you stay here to pay the bill, as they have a lot of difficulty taking credit card, as they only have a manual old skool swipy machine and it took around an hour to actually pay our bill (we had no more cash left)

There was no breakfast included, and werent told about the kitchen up on the roof, which we discovered by ourselves, the kitchen does have good utensils and stuff, cooking basics like oil, spices, milk & butter in the fridge.

The doors are securely locked and they dont give you a key, so you need to find the 1 woman that works there and ask her to let you out, and you must buzz to be let back in and have to wait for her to get down to open the door, there are 4 floors so it can take a while depending on where she is.

They dont make up the rooms, so if you run out of soap or toilet paper you need to find her again and try to indicate with sign language what you are after (if you dont speak spanish)

The wifi does not work in the rooms at all, and even if you go down to reception to use it, it is still really poor, probably the worst we have encountered after 2 months through South America, there is an Internet cafe next door though.



Good Location.

The woman who was working most of our stay was very kind and genuinely helpful. The location is great and the rooms are perfectly adequate. Breakfast was quite nice (bread, fresh fruit, eggs, instant coffee). I'm taking away stars because at check-out I was charged over 10% extra for using a credit card and was not informed until after it was already charged. Not only is this dishonest, it's usually against the agreement between the vendor and the credit card company. It felt like I was being taken advantage of, and indeed I was as evidenced by the way the staff (different woman and a man who seemed to be in charge) laughed at us as exited the building. Ouch. So unfortunate to have this experience in what was an otherwise fantastic visit to Otavalo.

Great, except...

I found the location to be clean. Shower water temperature varied. Wifi is present but not very good. The wifi has range of about 3 meters. Has low quality wireless access point. Staff are friendly. Great breakfast area on roof and good breakfast. Location of the Hostal/hotel is hard to find.
