Folklore Hotel

We three are just leaving the Folklore. We have had just the best  time. I travel overseas at least 5 times a year to many different countries mostly for work. This is one of the friendliest, relaxed and helpful places I have stayed. It is more than comfortable with a lovely touch of "local". The couple running the hotel are so nice. As an example, Berarndo the owner drove us to a restaurant last night because it was raining and taxis were hard to get. And if you want a great local guide with great English at $20 per hour, get Bernardo to book Ronaldo for you. He is a lovely guy, great driver and you set the pace. James, Ged and Vicki

Two adults and 6 teenagers were welcomed in this cute and reasonably priced hostel with a great breakfast.
Well located in Quito, safe and clean, it's a great choice for any traveling group or family.
Very friendly staff and owners even helped with our laundry after a Jungle tour.

The Folklore is situated on Madrid and Ponteverdra in the La Floresta district of Quito. The hotel is 10 minutes walk to the Mariscal and a 45 minutes walk to the historical old town. 
The rooms are clean and bright and the owner Bernardo is a friendly and welcome host. They serve a buffet breakfast in the cafeteria next to the garden.
I have stayed here 3 times over the last 2 months using it as  a base in Quito for exploring  the Galapagos Islands the Amazon rainforest, Bogota and Peru.

After reading the reviews posted by a group of Americans Iccan't believe that they stay at the same hotel

Such a friendly hotel

Friendly, Safe, Cute

Clean and friendly hotel.

The neighborhood is good, lots of shops and restaurants close by. The breakfast selections at the hotel are tasty. The rabbit is very cute. The husband and wife co-owners seemed friendly and helpful until cash disappeared from a locked closet in my room. They ignored my reporting of the problem and were not the least concerned. I had to insist that the police be contacted. If you stay here, DO NOT leave any valuables in the room.

Bad Experience

I generally don't write anything but good reviews about places I have stayed, thinking everyone is honestly doing their best, but feel I need to make an exception here. I was one of the ten members of the hiking group mentioned in an earlier review, some of whom knew they had been robbed while staying there.  (I had my suspicions that money kept in the locked closet in my room was disappearing, but never took the time to count it, so I think that was on me.) It was so disappointing, especially as we had all felt so "at home" while staying there. In regards to the robbery, I can only say that the owner, Bernardo, was very cavalier about the whole thing and when the police came to investigate, he never let any of us speak with them, interrupting constantly, laughing at us, and domineering the conversation with (his much better) Spanish.  
Other than that, the rest of my experience was also less than happy.  Bernardo was very difficult to get hold of before our arrival to confirm anything and did not respond to emails. after arriving very late at night, two of us who had been assured single rooms had to double up, because someone else was in one of our rooms ( and no compensation was offered to account for this.). 

The room I stayed in for the balance of the stay had a window that opened on to the common living area of the hotel, and this window was left open during the day so that, even though the door was locked, anyone could crawl in through the window!  (I would leave the window closed and locked, but it was always wide open when I returned.)

The smell of mothballs or insect killer was so strong in the room (always emanating from the "locked closet) that it was almost suffocating.  

I also have my suspicions about the "purified" water offered in the living and dining areas.  Both were soon empty the night we arrived and he said more would be delivered in the morning.  And, miraculously, both bottles were full again when we got up very early the next morning, though no delivery seemed to have been made.  My suspicion is that the bottles were being filled from the tap.  

My bathroom adjoined the one next door through a small opening in the concrete wall which offered visual privacy only. (One morning I could have sworn someone was in my bathroom using the shower, it was so loud.). The shower, which had sporadic water of any sort (hot or cold), had to be accessed by stepping over the toilet. (I was luckier than the lady who had to wear a shower cap while in the bathroom to keep her hair dry from the roof that leaked when it was raining!)

All of the above is to be expected, I guess, when you are staying at a budget hotel such as the Folklore, but given the experience of the robbery and other inconsistencies of the owner, I'd neither stay there, nor recommend the Folklore, to anyone else.

So disappointed!

Ten of us just spent 10 nights at this hotel. We are members of a California hiking group & are traveling in Ecuador & Peru for 3 weeks. We were the sole occupants at the Folklore, & on our last day there, several of us discovered that we were robbed of cash from our rooms. The hotel provided lock boxes, but these were also broken into. Between us, over $1000 US was taken. The police were called & a report was made, but the owner continued to insist that he &this wife had nothing to do with it, & the police did nothing. The hotel is locked, so this wasn't committed by  a random outsider. The ONLY people in the hotel at the time that we were being secretly stolen from was the owner & his wife. They appear very sweet, but are NOT what they appear. Avoid this hotel.
