Very good
17 reviewsAfter you read my review, you are going to question why I gave this place 4 stars.... so let me start out by saying that this review is based on paying $30 a night. Of course I would not give it 4 stars if I paid $100 a night. I feel like I need to give people a good idea of what they are getting into before booking this place. As you can see on Google maps, this place is just a block off from the beach. At the time that I looked at the map, you couldn't really see it but they are actually developing a HUGE 500 room hotel right in between this place and the beach. As a result, there is some construction sound right now and just about any view of the breach is obstructed (we weren't expecting beach views anyways). To get to Lodging House, you do have to go down a short dirt road on either side to access it, although it is on a paved road. The property is gated, but the gates are open most hours. When you walk in, you go straight to the back where they are using a room as an office. This place is actually an apartment complex that is owned by a number of people/businesses. Lodging House owns about 12 rooms between the two buildings that make up the complex and those rooms are all spread out. The property is managed by a family (2 adults and 3 children). The oldest daughter helped us check in and the son helped often with breakfast. The children are all learning English but it was difficult to communicate with them at times. Both of the parents speak better English, especially the husband. The rooms themselves are kept very clean. We actually books a "room with a fan" not realizing that meant no AC. There is no way at that time of year that we would have been comfortable without the AC. They were kind enough to allow us an option for a room with an AC, but that meant that our bathroom was outside the room. That was fine by us since there wasn't anyone in the other room in our "apartment" anyways. I think it's also important to note that only the bedroom has AC, so we did not spend much time out of that bedroom if we were there. The bedroom itself is scarce. As another reviewer noted, the bed has sheets but no comforter or bedspread. They provide two small towels and a hand towel for you to use. They did provide a very small bar of soap, which threw us off because we didn't bring toiletries since it was noted that they provide them online. We ended up buying shampoo at a drug store later. I wish I would have also bought some conditioner. The room did have some thin curtains, but unfortunately it provided no help at night. There are so many lights outside that our room never got anywhere close to dark. The bathroom was clean but in need of a little repair. The shower basin was sloping the wrong way which leads to water standing. I did my best to push it to the drain to keep it from staying there over night. The water itself must come from a well because it has a very strong sulfur smell. I would definitely not drink the water. The water really left my poor hair dry and a mess. There is a small kitchen in the apartment for you to use. All of the appliances are on the small side. The fridge worked great for keeping water and beer cold. They do provide a few pots and pans but I wouldn't plan on cooking anything in them. There were a few plates and utensils as well but nothing to make a huge meal in. They do provide breakfast every day but Sunday. It was fine but nothing to write home about. I wouldn't get the pancakes just because they give you one thick pancake and mine was a little burnt. The fruit was always bananas and either pineapple or papaya. The fruit was very fresh and good. Now, the beach that this had access too was awesome. Because the hotel isn't done yet, it was very quiet. The beaches here are all private, so if you aren't staying on the beach... good luck getting a beach chair to sit in. Right now, however, you can easily sit in the beach chairs that are out front of the hotel that is being built. I have no idea why they are there, but they work out great. The beach sand is nice and fine and easy to walk on. We lucked out with minimal sea weed on our side but it did start washing in on our last day. This spot on the beach is where they send off a bunch of boat tours, so you will see lots of tourists being dropped off there. We were able to pick up a catamaran snorkel tour for $50 each which was nice. As far as eating in the area, there isn't much to walk to right there. There are a couple little local style outside places right on the beach that serve fish and local fare. They don't speak much English which made it difficult for us to order. We ended up getting the boat guy from the beach to help us out for breakfast one day. We did walk back up the street that you come in on to go to an Italian place for dinner one night. The food there was really good (especially the pasta) but the road to get there was probably a little on the dangerous side with broken glass and no sidewalk to use. We ended up walking about 30 minutes down the beach to an area with lots of other restaurants for the rest of our stay. It was a decent walk but comfortable when we had some cloud coverage. We ended up paying the owner $25 to take us back to the airport. We paid $30 to get there and we thought he would be a better option. He is a very nice man and they definitely do their best to help you as much as they can with what they have.
