The location is quiet, but the city and the beach are easy to reach. We enjoyed spending time in the tropical garden and the Pool. We used the fully equipped kitchen to cook lunch and dinner, or we dined at the Beach. The place is so well constructed for ventilation that we did not even need to turn on the air conditioner often.
I especially liked the tips of our hostess, regarding shopping and activities to do around Puerto Plata. 

You will not need a rental car at this location since there is a Taxi stand, restaurants and a supermarket near by. Driving in Dominican traffic takes some time to get used to.  If using the Taxis, negotiate the price before hand, and have enough change to pay the exact amount in pesos.

Relaxing stay at a good location with a nice host

We stayed in a one bedroom for two weeks and it more than met our expectations for the price.  Easy walk to the beach but far enough away that it was quiet.  Easy walk to restaurants and grocery store.  Two covered verandahs and poolside cabana made rainy days more tolerable!  Beautiful gardens, fully fenced property, nice pool, kitchen has everything, renovated bathroom, comfy bed, and fast service through owner on site (bottled water restocking, new gas tank for stove, fresh towels and bedding).  Safe with key for valuables.  The only thing to note:  lots of stairs.  We didn't mind at all but those with mobility issues take note.

Private, peaceful, secure and great location

My wife and I stayed 7 nights with an Agoda 50% PayPal Prepay.
We arrived at POP Airport, used the ATM, then taxied(US$50) 25 km northwest to the gated Costambar Community.  Once inside, our driver called the Casa Tropical for directions for the 850 m to the property. Michael Hahn met us at the wooden entry and escorted us to the 1 bedroom bungalow just inside.
The large tiled entry room had a fully outfitted kitchen with micro, 2 gas burners, new full size refer, and all needed utensils.  Large couch in front of cabinet with large TV(English CNN/HBO) and dining table for 4 to the side.  Comfortable queen in tiled bedroom with AC, safe in closet and nice bathroom/shower to the side.  Fans and ample lighting add to this 5* studio
After 1 night, we were moved to our reserved middle floor studio in the main house which we discovered is the one apartment in this complex without AC. This was a mistake on my part as I thought all units had AC, our necessary precaution in places with mosquitoes. 
This small studio has a tiny sink counter with 2 gas burners(no micro), a small newly refurbished bathroom. The large room has a dining table for 4, new fridge, long cabinet with pans, dishes, glasses (all contributing to a functioning kitchenette), a firm queen and closet with safe.  It has a shared airy terrace with couch, chair and table that overlooks the pool, overall, a 3* studio and in this cooler time of year, a bargain at US$260/week 
Other reviews here detail the nice beach just 100 m down the street, 750 m to compact Jenny's Supermarket, and the availability of nearby expensive taxis or the inexpensive 'colectivos' near the security gate. 
This is a clean well managed property by nice owners who provide area info as desired.

Diverse studios near beach in gated Costambar.

Casa Tropical is located in the gated community of Costambar, which is a short distance south of the Industrial district. It is quite easily found as all roads have good signage. The property is a 5 minute walk from the beautiful Playa Grande beach. A reasonably priced supermarket (Jenny's) is a ten minute walk away, and there are many f&b locations within the community for casual or fine dining.

I stayed in an studio for 11 nights, and then a larger apartment for the final night. Both areas were clean and comfortable. Although the property is close to the beach which is quite busy, it was always quiet and a good rest is guaranteed. Both apartments had all the basic utensils for cooking and a gas stove and microwave was also provided. Laundry service is also available for a reasonable fee, and a small pool is available for relaxation. The only negative was the weak internet at times and the low water pressure in the smaller unit. 

Transportation is easily arranged, as a taxi station is 5 minutes away from the accommodation, and they are available 24 hours if you call and book. Local motorcycle transportation (Motoconcho) is also easy for the brave traveler, as they continually run through Costambar during the day. I would recommend this accommodation to budget travelers who wish to cook and do not mind the inconvenience of local transport. The community is quite safe, as guards on motorbikes patrol regularly.

Great location and host

We had a wonderful stay with casa tropical. Really close to the beach, nice, big and modern apartment with everything you might need.
The hosts are really friendly and helpful and attend to every need, we would definitely come back again! Sending our love to Blackie! :)

Perfect vacation!

Being that i wanted piece and quitness, i also had the bonus visual of a courtyard filled with beautiful flowers and tropical foilage overlooking from my elevated outside patio. If your looking to shake your booty Ocean World is just down the road. Beach is a 2 minute walk with some cute little rustic restuaurants to get a cold drink and some snacks. Room was efficiant with air, kitchenette, etc. For the money this was a great value to have as home bass to visit other parts of the countryside. The helpful owner is on property which i found as a plus. The property is located in a gated community called Costambar a suburb of Porta Plata.

This was a cute and quite efficiancy apartment that was just a 2 minute walk to the beach.
