We  had a great time in Mar del Sur .This is our 5th time and we will come back for sure ,it has become our second home. The staff is so nice and professional .We received a great service at the buffet ,the food was really good and  everything so well organized .The location and all the facilities around  ,right at the center of downtown ,make of it a priveleged hotel   Animation was outstanding,the shows by Randy and Yunior definitely are the best.We want to thank this wonderful team .

The Hotel is centrally located in Varadero which is really convenient. The satff is really nice and always willing to help the clients.  
The food and the services are pretty good for a 2 stars category hotel. I got more than I was expecting for. Really happy with my stay, I will come back soon

I stayed with my husband for the fifth time in Mar del Sur during 11 nights. They are our family in Varadero: all the officials and Commercial Director do their best to make us feel happy and confortable. The room was clean, with an split air conditioning, blank clothes changed every day, excellent attention, hot water and nice view. The quality of sleep is unique: it's a very quite place. The beach is a dream: one block ahead, the water is so warm, transparent... The food at the restaurant was delicious: every day it has different recipes, and of course, Cuban food. It is recomendable to go early at lunch and dinner to avoid lines. At the beach I enjoyed a perfect massage, they have a massage bed close to the bar there with a experient professional: ideal after a long year of work. For sure, we will repeat the experience.... And we are already planning our next trip and stay in Mar del Sur.

This is a great hotel, I had low expectations but I received a huge surprise. They are two stars, but the service is really great, the rooms, the food and drinks, and we know they work really hard to please their clients. The Entertainment is fantastic!!

Great Experience !!

Our choice in Varadero: unique beach and familiar attention

A perfect vacations

I sent an e-mail 10 days before I left and got the room I wanted . Building 33 second floor . Everything I did have in the room was new and clean . I think the frig had just been brought in  and new .  There was no closet and no shelves or drawers . No safe in the room . I was told they had them at reception , but they were all taken .  A luggage  stand and 6 hangers on a pole would have to do . Two night stands were delivered to the rooms the next day , as they are still doing reno's . Now , I had a shelf for tee shirts etc.  New strong A.C. unit blowing directly on the bed ( bad designer ?)  It was not needed much as the first week it was very cool . The tour buses line up right in front of the building at 4 am . The drivers talk very loud , so expect to be up early . The "party "  people come back late  so expect to be up late .  Food  was available if you lined up a half hour before opening and the line up inside for anything . I tried to hold a table , but people just pushed my stuff aside and sat in my chair anyway . I  rarely  ate there  as I didn't see cheese and the hard boiled eggs ran out .  As for drinks ,   there was no mix of any kind . Day 9 cola showed up  and day 12 lemon-lime  arrived . The same day they ran out of beer and had no ice . If the bar staff could think of ANYTHING else to do , rather then serve quests, they did it . My chambermaid  did absolutely   NOTHING  for 14 days  but pick up her tip  (I stopped leaving cash on day 4 . )  I did get a new small towel on day 12 left on the bed . Maybe by accident ? Lots of hot water and a rain shower head . Beach was great !  I always had my chairs by 7.45 am  and stayed all day when I was at that beach . I did go to 2 others . I did discover the A LA CARTE    that the rep didn't know about . It was great for 4 meals as the allowed me in anytime ! Then it seemed word got out ,it  got busy  and I think the Chef changed .They also ran out of wine (the only place to get it )  on my third visit . I didn't return .  I had 2 chairs on the balcony  but none in the room . New T.V. with many channels  3 english    . The hotel has potential  , but the quests it attracts  being a 2 star  and the staff spoil it for me . I most likely will be elsewhere  next time .

Second visit  Feb 21 - March 6

I had a nice room in building 33 on the second floor . 2 blocks from the main hotel , but near the buffet.  Very high ceiling .  Amazing A.C. unit , frig and flat screen T.V.  Silent during the night except  for one party night . The balcony door did not lock . It would be easy to hop the small wall from the rooms on each side . As the balcony was not clean or swept , with no chairs , I just interlocked the  table and chair legs in front of the door . The safe key can be had a reception with a $15.  refundable deposit . The staff for the most part were surly and slow ( even by Cuban standards ) The  "mob" would arrive  30 minutes before meals to line up . A few would wait until the last second and run to the front of the queue . It turned me right off ! I would wait about 15 min. before going in . I ate on the patio with the cats  for ALL my meals at the Hotel . I had to search for glasses , cutlery etc,  as none were provided outside  . It was a feeding frenzy !!  We hear talk of how the Cubans can take over , but they could take lessons from Russians ! The food was o.k.  , what I got of it . In the end I just ate like a Cuban , small bun , cheese and cold cuts . The plate stack , juice , coffee machine and egg station line up were all clustered in one corner . Got juice a few times and a omelet once out of 14 days !!  I don't have time to wait that long . The toaster was at the other end of the room , someone always seemed to be behind , pushing the toast back and picking up each piece ! I passed on that.  The pool looked nice at 6am . never spent any time at the resort . The Beach was amazing with lots of Palapes and chairs . It could get a little crowded  , but fun .  A mix of English French , Italian , Cuban and Russian  . Drinks and sandwiches at the beach bar  and a new one is being build ! . Bring a mug !!  The lobby bar was very limited and under staffed . I didn't spend time there either. Had I not had many friends at other resorts and Casas it would have  been a long boring stay ,as I saw few people I would be interested in talking with .  Many long staying people kept to themselves and complained about everything . I was glad the 13 days had perfect weather  .Worth a try if you have  low expectations  as I did . It was better then I thought it would be .

Not all bad Feb 20 -Mar 6 2019

very cheap and that is what you get. Fairly clean but most stuff doesn't work or only does so poorly. Beds were ok pillows terrible sometimes no towels and we didn't have sheets the first night. Toilet was repaired 3 times and still .... Sometimes out of glasses sometimes out of beer. Line ups to get into dinning room for meals and usually no glasses or cups and no coffee. Bread was very dry and stale. Buffet was filled with a lot of recycled food. Staff is very friendly and try their best. lots of cats but no dogs. Very very noisy.

Cheap place and still you don't get your monies worth.

After staying in cuba 6 times i always wanted to stay in a cuban resort and this was it.

The room:. The room id give a 2 star. I stayed in building 36.  These rooms were renovated so they were a bit nicer. The showers were cold or luke warm but in cuba thats usually normal. The ac blew cold. A friend i met in the resort was staying in the lobby building. The rooms are dated and old.  They are 1 star rooms.Try to avoid them if you can. Stay in building 34-36

The 24 hour bar: unfortunately it isnt a 24 /7 bar for food.  Food stops at 9pm and isnt served through out the day. and there are many restrictions. They stop serving hard liquor at times .  The beer is free flowing 24/7 however. When the buffet closes. They maybe serve a sandwich.  Quality of food is bad.

The buffet: the buffet is very small for the resort capacity therefore there was constant run outs of food, line ups for a hour at times. The buffet closes through out the day. Sometimes i wouldn't even go and eat at the buffet and go across.the street to the snack bar. I wont be returning to.this resort due to the line ups and constant food and.plate run outs. They also control the food and there definitely isnt enough to go around. The food is the same everyday. Usuallly fish and rice.  Sometimes they changed it to chicken. Lunch and dinner is the same.  Breakfast was the besy. Poached eggs and omelette station. Hard to mess up breakfast.

The beach bars.  So they have two beach bars. They arent directly on the beach which would be a deal breaker to.not.go.to.this resort again. They are both about 2- minute walk away from the beach chairs.  One is a paid beach bar and one is free.  The beach bars hours are 10-5 only. Again restrictions with hours.  I had a hard.time.dealing.with restrictions. On cuban resorts they need to cap the food and control it. The free beach bar didnt serve food.  They slapped a piece of ham on two bread slices. It was pretty bad. So the beach bar has no food essentially.  The resort serves cheap alcohol. Cheap no name.rum or vodka only throughout the resort.  They have no coco cola or soda on this resort anywhere. Only lemonade.  Beach chairs were always available with umbrellas. They had all.the rentals there which were paid ones.   The beach in varadero is always 5 stars . No complaints in that regard.  On the street up from.the beach. They have a pirate bar open late and serves decent food. Better then the resort and another snack bar. The hotel is in the starting of town.  There are barely any foreigners here and mainly cubans. The resort is a street over from the viazul.station so you can get to.havana for 12 dollars pretty easy. One way

Entertainment:. The entertainment was great cuban performers. Some days they had.a.host who would do things for.kids and families. Always can appreciate real.cuban entertainment.  Nightly show at the resort at 9-930.

Main pool-- never swam in the pool inside the resort.  Looked like there was black marks of algy maybe on the bottom of the pool.  The water didnt look too.maintained and no swim up bar. 

Water-- the rooms do not.provide any water.   It can be bought from government ran shops with credit card only for a dollar each. Do not drink the tap water.  If you have a water bottle the bars will fill it up for free.

Restaurant bookings on the resort:. The restaurant bookings are very difficult to deal with. The front desk tells you to come talk to the air transat rep.in the morning.  Sometimes.they didnt even give the booking. It was quite frustrating. Luckily got the restaurant for one day and the food taste normal.

To conclude the review.  I would like to thank the staff at mar del.sur which truly made my trip alot better regardless of the hick.ups. i go.to.cuba for.the people and beach. All the other stuff is a bonus.

Specifically i wanted to thank certain staff members for communicating with me after busting their ass 12 hour shifts in a low paying job. I was highly appreciative.  Maria fran and others always gave exceptional service. Always giving beer very quickly. The service was honestly great. Keep up the good work. 

The buffet.  Buffet staff were very nice. Loved the tall cuban girl. She was my favourite.  Pedro and Eduardo spoke perfect English and always comforting and very helpful. Thanks for the good times.

The cocktail bar in main building staff did a great job. Daniel spoke great English.   Very young man. Provided great service. Thanks allot. 

My favourite crew was was the beach 24/7 bar guys. Alexi. Grenalle orion juan.  Amazing guys. Always happy and ready to serve. If the bar was on the beach I would of spent more time.there.

If you go to cuba and you want the real feeling of how locals.travel and go to resorts. You will meet many cubans from.all.over cuba.   Not alot speak English. But i met around 4-5 English speakers. 

 Then.go.here.  however.   Only book this package if its 400-450 for 7 days and go rent a casa in the nearby cities or mantanza or cardenas or even go.to.havana.  that would.be the only reason i would book this again because you cant beat that value. My first true cuban resort in cuba. 6th time in cuba

We got the trip at a cheap rate. We booked 1 bedroom apartment. It was on the 1st floor in block 15 closest to the coffee bar. They made great cappuccinos. We didn't get the memo to bring your own kettle, coffee pot, microwave? Lol... 
The kitchenette had a full size fridge, garbage and a kitchen sink. We had a dining table and some cuban furnishings to watch the fairly new tv. The front desk won't give you a ticket for towels unless you give them 500 CUP per person and will return the  money when you leave. But... Here's the kicker...you can't buy anything in the tourist places with CUP's. They want Euros or a credit card which if your Canadian, will charge you in US dollars. We made the mistake of exchanging a vast majority of our Canadian money for CUP at the airport  1$ for 18 pesos. THEY DID NOT TELL US THAT THEY DON'T BUY BACK THEIR OWN CURRENCY. The DAYS OF CUC's are gone and welcome to the black market currency exchange. 

The bedroom door was off the hinges. Good air-conditioning and pretty good pillows. Clean and shower had hot water.
We had 8 brand-new hangers and the lights worked. We even had an awesome balcony.

The grounds are nice and well kept. Nightly entertainment and a secret à la carte. It's like pulling teeth to try and arrange a reservation or even finding out where it is lol. Luckily I read previous reviews. Now we are spreading the news to the 12 other Canadian vacationers.

On night 3 of not having desert at the buffet, we had to pay a few people to bring some out. We know why they don't have it out now. The cuban vacationers that were there, 200+, swarmed the kitchen staff and filled large plates of deserts for their tables within seconds. I was lucky to grab 2 small pieces of cake and 2 merangue cookies. 
The pool is nice but we preferred the beach with the white sand, nice breeze and blue ocean. Hence why we come. Weather, beach and ocean. 
The only disappointment was the garbage. MASKS AND PLASTIC BAGS AND CUPS. 
We always rent a moto when we come. This year it was 90$ US (credit card only) for 5 days and 10$ CAN for the attendants. Looking forward to getting out of tourist area and in with the people so we can spend our CUP's (hopefully) that we can't exchange lol. 
Some staff that we tipped were friendly but otherwise we were ignored. 


2 star resort at its finest 

I`m a regular visitor to Varadero so my expectations where realistic. We were at the Mar Del Sur Feb 7 to 16th. On arrival, we were given a room in really bad shape needing major renovations (a classic isn`t it ?). So the following morning we asked to change room. At first we were told it was impossible the hotel been full. After some talking and visiting another room as bad as the first one, I spoke with a client that was leaving that day saying in has a really nice room in bloc 13 (renovated). So I went back to the front desk and after some talking, we were offered room 13214. It is actually an appartement, really nice, for an extra 10 pesos a day. Beleve me, it worth every single penny. Let me thank Amarilys at the front desk who did all she could to help us moving room. She is a very nice person. The site is clean an de pool, A1. The service ... it varies depend of the person behing the bar. But keep in mind those guys have to deal with all kind of customers, 12 hours a day. Some rude, some drunk, some making their way behind the bar and helping themselves ... etc. Special thanks to Reynel Gonzalez, Ida and Marina. You`ll meet them at the lobby bar or pool bar. They`ve been very, very nice to us. The food at the buffet was ok. As you know, you don`t go there for the food. BUT !!! THERE WAS NO WINE, NO BEER AND NO SOFT DRINKS AT THE BUFFET, neither at lunch time or dinner. I know that there was shortages of all kinds in Varadero but not for wine. Ask questions before ...
