The hotel reminds me of the resorts in Bali, Indonesia with the rooms on varying levels set amongst beautiful gardens and water ways and a great backdrop of the mountains. Now the rooms on the other hand were very basic and ours smelt very musty. The view from our window was of pipe work running down the adjacent walls. When we arrived our guide advised us to follow the porter, up various levels, along corridors, up another level, around another corridor. I was concerned that we would get lost returning to the reception area. Breakfast was supposed to include western food, the only food resembling that food was fried eggs cooked in heaps of oil, very sweet bread, juice and tea. Next morning, we had some free time before going to the park and thought we would try the recreation area which included bowling and billiards. All the rooms were locked up and hadn't been used for some time. Luckily we had a great guide who took us to a local restaurant nearby and ordered the meal for us. Very few people speak English in this area.

Good location near national park entrance

An international hotel but no one at the reception desk can speak English : we needed to wait for them to call someone from the back office. 
In terms of service, they have poor information about the only attraction around : the Zhangjiajie park ! No precise information neither regarding transportation. :-(
The hotel is getting old which makes you think the room is not so clean.
Breakfast ok.

Anyone who comes to Zhangjiajie must know something. We didn't know that and it made things more difficult. There are two main entrances to the national park. This hotel is located within a walking distance to the the national forest park's entrance (senlin gongyuan in chinese). The main entrance where all the big hotels are, however, is called 'wulingyuan' and you need to get there first by car from this place (this hotel is found in a more rural area). 

The problem is that transportation is not that convenient. There was a minibus in the morning around 8:30 AM (for 10 rmb), but the hotel employees didn't know when the minibuses actually leave. We didn't want to lose the entire morning waiting for the next bus to fill up, so we just took an unlicensed "taxi". I bargained down the price from 100 rmb to 70 rmb. This was still a ripoff, but the people here know you have no other option and take advantage of this. I think you have better chances of finding licensed metered taxis in the afternoon than in the morning. These taxis obviously come from the wulingyuan area. 

The point is that since we came to Zhangjiajie for five days, It wasn't very convenient for us to be located in the less developed area of the park. If you stay in wulingyuan, you can make much more efficient use of the park's buses (their price is included in ther ticket's price) to get almost anywhere you want around the park .The distances inside the park are huge, so you have to take these buses anyway. From this entrtance, however, there is only one bus to one other section in the park. I must admit, however, that in my opinion the two scenic areas near this entrance are both the most stunning and the most walkable parts of the park. You should still remember that it's far easier to get here from the other side than it is to get to the other side from here...
The food in this hotel wasn't very good either. There aren't many options for dining around here, but you still should go for the local restaurants right near the hotel in case you stay here. I had the worst meal I have ever had during my entire trip to china in this hotel.
There was one girl who could speak some english... though I wouldn't recommend staying here with no chinese at all.
Other than that, both the service and the room were pretty decent compared with other similar chinese hotels at this level.

Average hotel, Problematic location

We went there because of the reviews but this is highly overrated. The rooms are not new and though it has everything a hotel of this class should, things are worn out, dirty, look old and just not maintained. The only good thing is there is central heating and we had a warm room.

The hotel complex is very big but, right from the entrance lobby to the room, things look just old and jaded and not comfortable. That's just not good enough at the price. Awkwardly enough, the balconies all face the inside courtyard. So, yes, you can see the mountains behind them but that's not really the point when you are in this area. 

The place shuts down during winter and, even more awkwardly, on New Year's eve. Breakfast was cold and stale. Well, try the others nearby.

Overrated hotel in most reviews... only location is good.

The good things first: The hotel is located just about a 5 to 10 minute walk from one of the national park entrances. Some rooms offer nice views of the surrounding mountains. 

And that's about it. We will definitely never stay there again. Why? All in all, the hotel has seen better days and is in need of some serious renovations. The grounds must have been beautifully landscaped some years ago, but now 'neglect' is the word that fits best. The rooms are quite spacious, but would be nicer, if they were cleaned regularly, something we could not notice during our three-day stay. The restaurant is also quite dirty, not inviting at all. Breakfast is only offered in the Chinese variety.

But the worst thing about this hotel is the reception desk. Not only does nobody speak a word of English in this 'International Hotel', but their friendliness reminded us of Soviet era hotels decades ago. They treat 'guests' more like 'inmates'.

For us, the happiest moment of our stay at this hotel was leaving it.
