Le Tour Shanghai Youth Hostel

Taken off one star for the rooftop being shut, I came a couple of years ago and it was open, would have been 5 stars then. Hostel is clean with a friendly staff and a 24 hour reception. They speak English fully and the common area is a fun place to meet people. I've stayed in a dorm, twin, and double room here and while I prefer the privates (they have a tv with English language channels and a surprisingly large bathroom for a hostel), the dorms are good too and the shared bathrooms are also kept clean. 

I visited Shanghai recently as a chaperone with 18 students.  We stayed on the 2nd and 3rd floors in doubles and the rooms were simple and clean.  Winter nights were cold but the heating system quickly warmed up the small space and we enjoyed 4 great nights.  The showers were amazing especially when we returned from a 4-day rural home stay - this place felt like a spa!  The rooftop bar felt like home and was a fun place to connect with other travelers.  The rooftop terrace is a great gathering place and with the plants along the walls makes it a beautiful, quiet outdoor gathering space.  It was a little bit cold while we were there in the winter, but I can only imagine what a wonderful space it must be to enjoy a meal or drink on top of this building in the spring or fall.

Conveniently located with fantastic rooftop terrace.

Shanghai is an expensive city and Le Tour is a nice budget option. I stayed in one of their mini apartments for 4 nights. 
The place is clean and minimal. Everything is there, but you don't feel super comfortable. There was no nice sitting chair + table, so I lay on the bed most of the time. Shower / bathroom was good enough to get the job done, but that's about it.
Anyway, it was a budget place and it was China, so I guess I should have adapted my expectations accordingly. 
Staff was friendly but their English was poor. I'm sure this is a vibrant place in summer, but when I was there (half December) it was a quite quiet...
Location-wise it's really very good. Just a 10 min walk from the largest metro line + Jian Temple, and countless bars (most for expats), shops and restaurants nearby.

Clean, simple place at a great location

The one and only problem I had while staying at Le Tour YH was finding it at 10PM. 
Stayed at a 5-pax dormitory on the ground floor; the room was quiet, the shared showers and toilets were clean. The common area is nice, though a bit chilly. Breakfast was the normal Western - Chinese interpretation of american breakfast.
Staff were practical and helpful.
Plus points for location (roughly 10-15min walking from Jing'An Temple station and some 10-15min walking from very good cafés).
Overall, a good experience.

Practical. Good atmosphere.

We took a flight to Shanghai from Guilin and found that the property is easy to access from the airport via the subway and a fairly short walk from Xiang Yun Temple station.

When we first arrived at the property we realised that it was down a back alley from the main road and was a couple of metres away from a fairly busy petrol station.
We booked our stay with the property via booking.com and didnt notice that there was an extra 15% service charge added onto the overall room rate in the small print at the bottom of the page so be sure to check that before booking your stay. This is the only place we stayed in china that had a service charge added on, yet there was very little services available and our bed sheets weren't even replaced once throughout the stay.

The staff behind the desk seemed misurable, abrupt and as though they really didnt want to help us with any questions that we asked throughout the stay.

On the description of this place it stated that there was a rooftop terrace, a kitchen and a bar... but the kitchen and bar are no longer in use and are closed off so this should really have been removed from the description.

In the rooms there were tea cups and a kettle but no complimentary tea to put into the cups. The rooms themselves were quite small (there were 3 of us sharing one room and we struggled to have enough space to unpack the majority of our things), our window view was of the petrol station and the window didnt completely shut so we did have a bit of noise coming through at times. On a good note the rooms were clean.

I probably wouldn't recommend staying at this hostel as I think it is overpriced for what it is and I'm sure you can get a friendlier hostel/ hotel nearer to the centre for the same if not a little bit more in price.
