Good value hotel in an excellent location and unusual building, close to Nanjing Road shopping and the Bund. Quiet, large, slightly weary rooms (though we were upgraded to a larger room with balcony) with comfy beds and nice bathrooms. Helpful, smiley staff. Three areas to improve: instead of the usual kettle, an espresso-style coffee maker was provided. Sadly, only 1 capsule/day/person were supplied. Worse, it was not possible to make tea because the water was always tainted with coffee flavour. An ordinary kettle might be better! Secondly, breakfast, though plentiful, was short on non-Chinese choices: cereals etc would have been very welcome. Lastly, while we were there in March, there was a heatwave. Our room temperature went up to 28c, but the aircon didn’t work. Although we were given a fan, the room was still unbearably hot at night, making it difficult to sleep. There was no attempt to mend the aircon. We would return to the Metropolo because of the value (much better than large western chains) and location, but maybe in the cooler months…
