This is really a pity. The hotel claims to be 5 stars and at first view, one might believe it could be the case -  lobby is nice and the room is attractive and modern.  However, there is no WIFI in the rooms and no way to arrange it. (The night before, in a smaller town, at a more modest hotel, they whipped up some modems in no time at no charge - solved). 

But the main thing was that though there is a modern electronic thermostat and HVAC system, it doesn't do anything. Not just my room, ALL rooms. I mean not just no heat and no cooling, but no fan could be turned on!  The room was hot and stuffy and the windows could only be cracked ~ 3".   I'm not that fussy, but I am from the upper Midwest USA, and used to some airflow. At the front desk there was a Chinese fellow complaining at the same time as me. All the front desk guys could do was inform that all rooms were the same, like that was supposed to help - at a "5-star" hotel yet. I feel sorry for the embarrassed people that work there because I found out the bottom line was this:  Guests complain to the staff all the time, the owners/managers have been made aware of the issue, but they do nothing about it, clearly in a greedy attempt to keep costs minimized. In a place like Kunming, there is no excuse for this.  I insisted that they at least find a fan and that they did. But I wasted 45 minutes wasting time while "someone was checking into the problem" before the truth was revealed. Go elsewhere - the ownership does not deserve your patronage and there are plenty of choices around town.
