Kunming July Hotel

I stayed here for a night during a stopover and was suprised of how nice this hotel is! Super nice compfy beds, everything you need in case you did not have access to your checked bags (shower gel, shampoo, tooth brush, drinking water, ... ). You need to bring cash and you need to wait for the shuttle service (almost 2 hours wait) but in the end they come and get you and the next morning things went very smoothly! Recommended!

Although the hotel reeks of cigarette smoke, it's very clean and cheap, the room was spacious and the bed comfortable (though the 'shower' in the bathroom was bizarre), and the airport pick-up/drop-off was included in the very cheap price. For what it was, it was absolutely perfect! We'd use it again, for sure.

While the hotel is about 15 minutes from the kunming airport, getting there if you do not speak chinese will be difficult. If you want to use the free shuttle, it is a small unmarked van that stops/parks somewhere on the departure level (on the road or in the parking structure). You must converse with the driver to reach it. If you use the Ctrip reservation form, the address in chinese is only the district. No taxi driver would take us to this hotel even when i was traveling with a chinese speaker. (Perhaps it was too close for them?) The hotel is in an area undergoing major renovation, the roadway is rough at times. 
The hotel is physically pleasant with adequate, clean rooms but definitely chinese, not international. some reception personnel can speak some english, all signs are in chinese only as well as the TV channels. the breakfast is minimal asian style. 
There is a small convenience store attached to the hotel. 
The free wifi can be frustratingly slow.
Free airport return starts at 5:30 AM until 12 noon. 
If you accept these limitations, this close-to-the-airport hotel is a good value.

I booked this hotel from another site where the reviews must have come from another hotel. The reviews mentioned it being close to the park and other things that were not true. On the other hand the hotel was very reasonable and it was very close to the airport.  Transportation to and from the airport was free and the rooms were very neat and clean.    There was someone at the desk that spoke enough English for us to communicate during the two days we stayed at the hotel.  

The hotel is close to the airport but not in the city center and it is probably a good half hour trip to the downtown area. It is a great place to stay if you are in transit as the free transportation, large comfortable rooms and budget price would be hard to match. The neighborhood was very interesting as there are regular horse drawn taxis on the street; something that you won't see downtown. There were also some interesting shops and restaurants near by.

Fine airport transit hotel but getting there can be difficult

A Good Hotel Close to the Airport in an Interesting Neighborhood

This hotel is nowhere near Kunming downtown, but it is convenient if you just need an overnight near Kunming airport. Airport to hotel took 12 minutes door-to-door.
I speak no Chinese, so on arrival at KMG I asked the information counter in International Arrivals to call the hotel for me, and send the shuttle bus to pick me up. It took a while, and a second phone call - but a guy did eventually come and collect me from the counter. He led me upstairs and outside - then discussed with another younger guy about something, before handing me over to this younger guy who took me to a van. Of course I was thinking of all the things that didn't look right with this.......and when I got to the van, there was another Chinese guy sitting in it. Oh no - 2 against 1, I don't know any Chinese, no directions, and it's late at night - great!
Thankfully it all worked out OK - this other guy was a passenger going to another hotel near July Hotel......the drive was literally 12 minutes. We stopped outside a hotel and I was told to wait - the other passenger got out. Then the driver and I drove on - another 100m and arrived at July Hotel.
At check-in, no-one spoke a word of English - but they found my booking, wrote an amount on paper that I should pay (room rate & deposit) and gave me a room key. I took the lift to my room - had to guess which floor it was on - all rooms start with a #8 but there are only 5 floors! (The floor number is the 2nd number of the room number!)
The receptionist didn't know how to ask me what time I wanted to go back to the airport the next morning, so she used her phone's translation tool - it said "tomorrow airport what time"!!
The following morning, the shuttle left on time, stopped at another hotel to pick up some more guests, then 12 minutes later I was at the airport.
So it DOES work.......in a Chinese way!
Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Only drawback - thick/hard pillows.
Neighbourhood of hotel was dusty/dirty - bit of a building site - but it worked for an overnight near the hotel. Kunming city is around 40 minutes from airport - so this is a good option if you just need a bed near the airport.
Wifi in room was good enough to talk on Skype.
