East Huangshan Youth Hostel

The East Huangshan International Youth Hostel is very well located, near the Tangkou city. Its surroundings are beautiful, you will enjoy amazing sceneries. The hostel is clean, comfortable and the ambiance is very enjoyable. The staff is friendly and very helpful. It was a great experience, we highly recommend to visit it.

We went to a Huangshan 'Yellow Mountains' Trip on the 30th of December 2012. The East Huangshan Int'l Youth Hostel as the name suggests is in the East of Huangshan & it takes about about 20 minutes from the Main Bus Stand in Tangkou which is the base of Yellow Mountains.The Hostel is located in the main road &easy to locate.The Receptionist was very helpful & spoke little english.They provided us with warm water & all the winter essentials since it was sub zero degrees.Very Neat & clean rooms with A/C attached(A/C runs in Heater mode)Bathrooms could have been little better,however from the price point of view,this was a steal. The surroundings became more beautiful as the day progressed & we were greeted with fresh snowfall.The Hotel has a mini store which sold insulating plastics,socks,soles etc along with some ready made food.There are many restaurants nearby,we had our lunch in the restaurant opposite to the hostel which was nice & cheap.Overall an excellent stay.Highly recommended for budget backpackers!

Very Helpful staff. Nice Clean n decent rooms with crisp clean sheets n quilts. Excellent heating in the rooms.   The bathrooms had continuous supply of hotwater.  and sensor switches which would turn off on their own once ur out. The hostel provided free hot drinking water, wifi, n toileteries as well.  

The best part was the surroundings... very very scenic.  there is a restaurant bang opposite which serves  good food at a decent price. The holstel also has a small store wid local necessary stuff.

The eng speaking receptrtionist were more than helpful in providing necessary tourist info n arrranging cabs.

Great Value for Money @ East Huangshan Int'l Youth Hostel!

Beautiful Hostel and closest one to the huangshan Mountain base.

A caveat to this review: we do not speak mandarin and it was probably the busiest time of year to go. 

Location: This hostel is a huge compound like building in a small, remote & rural town about 30 minutes away from Tangkou (base of Mt Huangshan). There is nothing really within walking distance of the hostel. We stayed here because of the low price and one of the only available places to stay over Chinese holiday.  

Facilities: The reception area is cute with quite a bit of character.  There is a bar/restaurant with some good options. The rooms are nice, however, common areas are dirty. The beds are mats on wooden surfaces, so a very hard mattress. Some neat outdoor areas. Beautiful landscape in distance. Pretty good facilities for a hostel in this price range. 

Service: One of the reasons we booked this place even though it was further away was because they seemed to offer a pickup service. From Hostelworld Maps & Directions: "Long Term Coach. Take coach buses from neighbor cities to Tangkou(South Gate), we pick you up there". We emailed a couple days before inquiring about a pickup and never got a response. We called and they advised us to take a taxi for 150 RMB. When we arrived at the hostel, we inquired about this and they said that they can pick up but it would also be for a similar fee to the taxi and there was nothing about a price on the website. Something they can hopefully clarify on the website in the future as I believe these type of descriptions are misleading. From our previous experience, all hostels would arrange a pickup free of charge when providing this type information on a website. 

They were adequately staffed at the front desk, however, the level of service was all over the board and I don't think this was a language barrier issue. We planned with the front desk one morning to get a taxi to the mountain at 5am (normal time for heading to Mount Huangshan). When we got down to lobby the guy working the front desk was sleeping in this upstairs loft area, and when we told him about taxi, he said "too early" and went back to bed. It wasn't until a couple minutes later more travelers came down to the lobby that he woke up and helped to arrange a taxi.  He might have been sleepwalking because at one point he asked for our passports and proceeded to take a picture of every page on his cell phone. They'd already taken our passports at check-in, this seemed to be completely random. We asked multiple times, but he never explained why he was doing this.

There were some helpful individuals along the way, but overall the service level was poor. 

For this reason, I would not recommend staying here, even with the decreased price. 


Has potential...but ruined by Chinese level of customer service

We (3 friends from Israel) stayed at the hostel before climbing the mountain, due to the good reviews we read here and its proximity to Tangkou. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT WAS BAD: The heating in the lobby didn't work, only one staff member spoke understandable English, the printer was broken so we didn't get a proper map of the mountain, the room was small and dirty, the shower stream was bad, the A/C in the room barely worked, and the so-called "beds" broke our backs. Plus, the hostel was nearly empty, and the guests that were there smoked in the lobby, so the atmosphere was also horrible. We just waited for the morning and for the taxi that was ordered for us (overpriced, obviously) to take us away from there.

There is actually no need to go to this hostel just to be close to the mountain, because hostels in Tunxi offer comfortable and cheap bus services to the mountain. do yourself a favor and get a normal hostel in Tunxi...
