The hotel staff were very helpful, though not necessarily obsequious in the western way. It also helps to speak some Chinese. Finding the place--you need to go into the shichaihai fitness school! There are three entrances, two off di an men and the third and closest from the back, up the last little street before the road along the lake. Study google maps carefully, use your phone, ask the guards at the gates--show them your luggage if you can't speak Chinese. It is not too difficult once you figure it out and then you will realize you have found something unusual and fun, in one of the best places to walk around in Beijing. A great way to see things. It is also just 5 minutes from the northeast exit from north beihai north subway station. Easy to get cabs in the area too. Lots of hot water, spacious rooms, cool hutongs to explore. Would gladly come here again. And yes, not the cheapest place, but all round a great place to stay for the reasonably self-sufficient. Bring instant coffee. Also quiet rooms and fun garden.
