The nice and friendly atmosphere at this Hostel is what I valued the most. The staff not only know much about what to do in Valparaiso, they also know much about chilean history an politics, which in the end made my trip more interesting. 
    The nice terass is also a big plus, to hang around there in daytime, or in the long evenings. The house is very nice, with typically high cealing, comfortable kitchen and of course nice beds in the dormitorios./ Per

I would really like to recomend this hostel. It's has all the things you want a hostal to be; it´s clean and it has the perfect location in the picturesque cerro alegre close to urban restaurants and bars. The hostel has comfortable beds, the kitchen is good and you get a tasty breakfast. But what I appreciated the most was the warm atmosphere. The staff is really friendly and willing to help you. It´s not a hostel where they by slentrian mark out the most touristic places on a map. My experience is that they really listened to me to see my interest and then tried to recomend places more special to me. We spent many moments in the common areas exchanging experiences and stories. Hope you´ll get the chans to stay at Cantaita and meet the people there. In my opinion this is a perfect hostal!

I had an amazing time at Hostal Cantaito! After finding it through a friend while traveling solo, I had such an amazing time that I came back a month later with a couple of friends, and this ended up being my home base while I travelled around Chile. The owners treat guests like family, which was just what I needed while traveling so far from home, especially while alone. There's always music playing, delicious breakfasts (bread, avocado, jam, etc.), and the walls are decorated with handwritten notes from former guests who enjoyed their stay. The people there, whether they work there or are friends of the hostel, have connections all over the city so they helped me see a side of Valparaiso that tour books never could. After 6 months of traveling in South America, almost a year later Cantaito stands out as one of the best places I landed. I spent many tranquil mornings drinking yerba mate on the terrace, while people played instruments and sang, or read or talked. It's not like any other hostel, and it's not corporate at ALL. Once you get past that, if you need to, you'll love all the warmth, charm, and comfort of staying at Cantaito. They really treat everyone with genuine care, and they are passionate about helping people explore their beautiful city.

We stayed here over the new year for 3 nights, the guy who was in charge there with the dreadlocks was really kind and very helpful.
The rooms were basic but clean, same with the bathroom. This is very central.
The breakfast was very good and we was offered hot drinks and fruit when we arrived back after a day out.

Only down side to this hostel, was his friend who use to paint the walls. He did not speak English and at first when we arrived he slammed the door in our face even though we had a booking.

Great Stay!

Perfect hostal!!

The best place in Valparaiso!!!

Like staying with family!

We stayed here in a shared dorm for one night. The two Rasta guys working in the hostel were very nice and friendly.
Unfortunately there is only one bathroom for the whole hostel, which was not such a big problem as it was a pretty quiet time. But I guess it could be a problem when they are full. 
Though promised, there was no warm water in the shower. And instead of saying "Sorry" the third (a bit weird) guy working there just commented it would be healthy.
Prices seemed to be equal to other hostels in the area (8.000 - 9.000 CLP = 15-17 USD).
Also by this third strange guy who worked at the hostel, we were explained after cooking in the kitchen that we were lucky we could use things like salt and oil. In no other hostel they would do this. Strangely, but it happened to me multiple times during my travels in South America. ;)

In general there was nothing really bad, but also nothing especially good. I guess you can find better places for equal prices.
