5/5 for location, price and staff. The hostel is basic, not a romantic getaway. The location is fantastic, within walking distance of everything. The rates will leave you feeling clever. Spend your money on the slopes. Solid staff.

I want to give this place less than one star. I understand that this place is cheap ($20) but is it worth compromising my health and safety, no. When you first walk in you get overwhelming smell of smoke and urine. The bathrooms are covered in grime and the sink has fungus cultivating in it. There are paper signs everywhere with messages like “don’t put your clothes too close to the bed because there are bedbugs” and “Don’t leave food out there are mice”. They gave us wet blood stained sheets, people smoking in their rooms which some of them look like they are squatting there. This place does not look like the photos....BEWARE! 
I feel like this place does injustice to travellers booking online and not knowing what they are going to get. It’s not a great representation of what Canadian hostels are and should be. 
Don’t get me wrong you get what you pay for and after calling every hotel and hostel before finding this one, it was our last option. We couldn’t get a refund even though we slept in our cars. The manager was rude, went straight on the defensive and said we know “girls like you” and continued to yell at us saying there is nothing wrong with how they run that place. 
Over all avoid this place at all costs, especially travellers, it’s not worth the bed bugs you will most definitely get!

Grossest place I’ve ever seen in my life

best budget hostel in VC. Might be a bit messy at times but if your ok with that then 10/10 would recommend. Very chill environment and a great place to make friends. Would recommend to stay there for a few days.

A group of 3 of us arrived at this hostel, previously having prepaid online. Upon arriving (generously before closing time) we had to talk to the guy behind a barred gate, who told us we'd have to pay him $10 to let us in. We knew this was complete crap but we didn't have a backup to go to so we paid him anyways.
Once we got into the hostel..wow. Our room had blood spots on the pillows and sheets, felt like our room was used as a crack den many times over. I didn't even feel clean with the idea of sleeping on the floor. After looking at the bathroom it was absolutely insane. A bathtub in the middle of a mildewy room, it was like something out of the movie SAW. 
We knew we couldn't stay here so we went back to the desk after checking the place out and tried to get a refund. The deskman just ran away down the hall and closed himself in some room and wouldn't talk to us. There were many warning signs that this place was completely messed up, in front of the desk there were all these notes saying things like "don't write negative reviews, we're providing a great place etc. blah blah blah" trying to justify why the hostel is so poorly run.
This place really needs to be closed for health reasons. The general vibe of the place feels very drug-laden. Steer clear if you're a traveller looking for a place, this isn't the place for you, trust me.

This place should be shut down, extremely filthy. Better of sleeping in a vehicle if available

Please, understand, this is not a place for travelers, students etc. It should not be listed as a hostel, or hotel. It is a lodge for temp workers coming from other parts of Canada and the World - which is not wrong, but below standards of any 'bad' place you can stay. On top of that, the ads, photos, comments are misleading and does not reflect reality. If you need one time only (on a budget), sacrifice and stay at the airport. If you are staying longer, pay a little more for another hostel. 
They not necessarily honor online bookings... it is a mess. You can tell by the 'thousands' notes written in piece of papers all over the place. Cockroaches all over the shower, people smoking in every room. VERY UNSAFE! VERY DIRTY! PHOTOS ARE NOT REAL!

NOT FOR TRAVELERS

In the most expensive city of Canada, this hotel provide cheap accomodation for travellers. Of course, this won't be the quality of the Mariots and it can appears a little bit dirty but you have everything for your money : decent bed in dormitories or single rooms, showers, functionnal kitchen and welcoming word travellers to share experiences with you. I stayed there for a long period of time and I recommend this place for any traveller visiting the city on a budget. Vincent, the owner of the place, is a kind and smart human being :) Baptiste

Great price ,really cheap. awesome location close to all the nice spots in downtown Vancouver, good management  a great place for a backpacker like myself it was awesome I made a lot of friends on a amazing place

I have been staying here long term in a dorm.The staff is friendly and the place is clean. The people that stay here are awesome. The common area has guitar, keyboards, dijuridu, amplifier, charango. The place is very charming and the building is a heritage building. Even queen victoria stayed here, but it is very old and some people thing it is dirty. However, the building is just old. The atmosphere is what counts. This is the most friendly hostel in Vancouver.

Lively Hostel located in perfect location

American Backpackers is an awesome little hostel in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. I made a lot of amazing friends here. There are always nice and interesting people to talk to, and you are allowed to have small parties and listen to music. So far my best hostel experience in the whole world. Thank you to the owner Vincent, for creating such a loving place for travelers to hang out and meet new people.

This is a great little hostel always full of interesting people. The owner Vincent is a very loving man and treats the guests well. This place really has a great vibe, and the people quickly became my family. I definitely recommend this hostel, especially if you want to make new friends and have fun.
