Pousada Tio João

considering how expensive it is to get to fernando and the additional costs once you arrive (arrival tax, beach tax, food and day trips), we wanted a place that was conveniently located and comfortable and we found exactly that. the owner of the pousada generously arranged a free pick up and drop off to the airport for our stay which was very much appreciated. the pousada is located a comfortable 10-15 walk minute walk from the main restaurant/shopping area of fernando and a 10 minute walk to Conceicao Beach (if you get permission to walk through the grounds of a neighbouring pousada). getting around the island involves either hiring a buggy or using the many taxi buggies that operate (R$20-30 per one-way trip). if you book a day excursion or boat trip it will usually include pick up from your hotel. the pousada was simple and clean and excellent value for money (compared with the available accommodation on fernando). the room and bathroom were both a good size and there is an LCD tv in the room (which we never really used) as well as good functioning air conditioning. breakfast was good with some fairly standard brazilian options of fruits, bread, cheese and cold meats. the staff were friendly and helpful but only one of the staff members spoke english which made things slightly complicated when trying to make bookings for day trips. considering that we spent most of our time at the beach and exploring the rest of the island this was the perfect option for us and would definitely recommend to others.
