Lapacho Hostel

I went there waiting for the pass to Santiago (which was closed due to a huge snowstorm). The crue welcomed me with open arms even though I didn't have a reservation, nor did I know when was I leaving. After a few days I fell sick because of something I ate outside, and they took great care of me, helped me find medications and an english speaking doctor. 
I felt home even though I was sick half a world away!! And all thanks to them :)
I would definitely go back there!
PS : the room 6 was going under renovations while I was there for those who were wondering!

Lapacho Hostel is well located near the tram, and a few blocks from the street with all the bars and restaurants.

All of the communal areas were great, a warm reception, clean kitchen, and plenty of information about excursions.

My problem was with the room (number 6) here is a small list of why not to stay in room 6

1) top of the list- the bed. The mattress is far too aged & has springs which poke into you everywhere. It was the most uncomfortable nights unsleep I've ever had- we both woke up in pain and tired. This mattress needs to be replaced (as do the lumpy pillows)
2) The carpeted floor was filthy (see photo attached) 
3) The bed sheets were too small for the bed.
4) There is a delightful communal courtyard area- but a guy was playing really bad trance at a hefty volume until 1:30 am in it. I could have yelled at him to turn it down but figured I wouldn't sleep anyway with the springs so didn't bother. I'm surprised the staff didn't think to ask him to lower the volume after midnight though.
5) Hairs in the sink and on the loo seat meant that the bathroom had not been cleaned properly.
6) no mirror in the bathroom.
7) Noise from the corridor and reception seemed to travel easily through the thin walls and doors- ontop of the disco downstairs

I think most of the above could be easily be fixed by the management. I hope they read this and can make improvements. There are other rooms in this hostel, perhaps they're not all this bad- but DO NOT BOOK ROOM SIX!!!


No sleep

If you want to go to this hostel - better check your booking twice! 
I booked the hostel via Hostelworld, got a confirmed booking and afterwards an email from the hostel, saying "Sorry - we overbooked our rooms, but please come by anyway to one of our other rooms".
Trying to negotiate via email which night the booked room is actually available turned out to be a great waste of time - the final reply was about: "Sorry for the inconvenience and not being able to stay - it's high season and we're booked out."

So good advice: if the hostel has no ratings published on hostelworld, they might have a good reason not to show the reviews...

A confirmed booking is worth nothing - better check twice!

We made a booking through TripAdvisor / Booking.com and upon arriving the lady told us the hostel was fully booked and denied any record of our booking despite me showing her the confirmation email we had received. We weren't even let in the front door! Not a happy traveller.
