The Duke of York is a proper British local pub in a building that's a good few hundred years old.The staff and the locals are friendly and welcoming and the food is great.Dont get upset that there's no lift to the upper level or at the absence of Aircon.Just go with the flow

Duke of York is a fantastic original village pub - with a cosy atmosphere and a very good dinner menu

A fantastic find, we had a one night stay on way to Cornwall, the staff and food were excellent. The locals were all friendly and made you feel welcome

We came to the pub for lunch and we were not disappointed. It was a freezing cold day, but there was a log fire burning and a very warm and friendly atmosphere. The place was full of olde world charm, which I loved. If you want modern, go to a new pub! 
We wanted to try the infamous steak and kidney puddings, so we both ordered one. The meal was HUGE. More than that, there was lots of really tender steak and kidney in a delicious gravy, all wrapped up in a light suet pudding case. I hadn’t had anything like it since my childhood - 5 decades ago! The mash was smooth and the fresh veg perfectly cooked. I couldn’t fault the dish at all - only to say that we were too full up to try a dessert. 
The staff and locals were friendly and welcoming. Do visit here if you’re in the area.

Fantastic visit for lunch

This is what I call a 'Proper Pub': great food, great atmosphere, not trying to be anything more than the true old style hostelry that is sadly disappearing from many of our towns and villages.  I spent just the one night here; wish I could have stayed longer. Very comfy en suite room in this lovely old (listed?) 15th C stone and cob building that has not a straight line in any of its walls. Simple facilities, no fancy frills like complimentary toiletries or hair dryer, so ensure you bring your own if you stay. Wonderful old bedstead and brown antique furniture. I slept like a log.The generous halloumi fajitas meal I had was terrific and great value at £14. Afterwards I enjoyed a good beer or two sat at the bar chatting with locals. As a single female guest I felt very welcome and completely at home. I might have to move to Iddesleigh...

We loved the Duke Of York . So far it is the best place that we have stayed in on this trip. The food has been fantastic , wonderful made to order breakfast , the best Sunday beef roast dinner that we have ever had! The place is so unique with its history and ambience. The location is remote but worth getting to. No traffic noise , just a beautiful peaceful view from our room . The staff is wonderful and all of the other patrons very friendly. We picked this location because it was near where we were doing family research. We are so glad we did.

Last minute decision to try this welcoming friendly pub for an evening meal. Good varied menu with an extensive specials board. Although we had chosen a quiet night there was still a nice atmosphere in the restaurant area of the pub ( we could have eaten in the bar but chose the restaurant) 
The food was really good and a credit to the chef.
We will definitely be making a return visit.

Great food

Is this one of the best pubs I have EVER been to (and I've been to a few!)  YES IT IS!!!!

Where to start?  Beautiful location, a beautiful building, a warm cosy proper bar with roaring fire when the weather is appropriate, brilliant food, brilliant staff, a brilliant Landlord and amazing beer and cider!

We had been to the Duke a few times whilst on holiday nearby in the past, this time we opted to stay a few nights, we had a lovely room just opposite from the pub which was charmingly traditional with a comfy bed and an amazing view of Dartmoor.

Breakfast was exceptional, particularly the smoked Haddock and poached egg.

A real real gem, yes its a bit precarious to get too and from sometimes due to the location but its well worth the effort.

Everything You Want From a Pub

Went down to Iddesleigh for the saddest of reasons. We stayed at the Duke Of York and it is just a wonderful pub with great beer, food, welcome & staff. 

We stayed in the lovely cottage attached tot he pub & nothing was too much trouble for John and his staff.

Excellent stay for a sad event

After a somewhat convoluted journey but goodness, how well worth it all was.    The welcome was fabulous, a superb fire in the bar, where one could eat, and lots of small intimate dining rooms should one want peace and quiet.....
The menu  selections was large, as was the Special Board.    My husband had the liver and bacon, it was fantastic.    I chose the garlic mushrooms, and was not disappointed.   We had a wonderfuol Sunday lunch, and despite the journey form Exeter, will ensure it is on our regular vlist.

My wife and I visited the Duke of York, on a very, very wet Saturday lunchtime, after it being recommended to try it..
We had pre-booked a table. And although a bit out of the way, and when we arrived, it looked as if it was shut, it wasn't it, it was quite, quite busy, many 'regulars' at the bar - some with dogs, and many people 'visitors dining. I didn't know they had a designated 'dining room', but as there was a roaring fire in the bar area, we stayed and ate in the bar. The food was delicious, the welcoming host, and banter from the regulars made for a splendid lunchtime meal. We would really recommend it.

Great food, great atmosphere

I stayed here on the way to Cornwall to break my trip up. What a fantastic place. A real Devonian local pub serving the most moth watering home cooked food in large portions.
As soon as you walk through the door you are made to feel welcome by John and his team. Nothing is too much trouble. 
The bar is still its in original state from years gone by with a large Inglenook fire place to sit and relax at.  There is a separate restaurant just through from the bar if you prefer to dine in there. Having stayed here at least half a dozen times i can say the food is delicious. 
Accommodation wise there is 6 or 7 bedrooms spread between the pub itself and its cottage directly opposite. The bus also runs its own minibus service which is handy for shooting and fishing party,s as well as large groups of diners from neighboring villages. 
The pub is situated in the heart of the village surrounded by rolling hills and countryside and is a great base to walk from. With a couple of rivers and the Tarka trail nearby their is plenty of different walks to try out. The town of Hatherleigh with its many shops and restaurants  is just a 10 minute drive away and beyond there is easy access into North Devon and Cornwall.
I would thoroughly recommend anyone in the Dukes vicinity calling in for a meal as a minimum if not a stay over on your way down to Cornwall. 



A Real Hidden Gem !

As part of Beaford Arts oral history project associated with their immense photograhic archive covering life in rural North Devon, I booked a meeting room in this wonderful pub. The landlord and staff were very helpful and the eight members of our conversation group thoroughly enjoyed being in the pub. I will return to savour both the attractive food and wide range of real ale.
