Fantastic
3 reviewsMy wife and I stayed at Happy House, following a recommendation from a friend. The resort is just off the main road between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rei, nr Doi Saket. and is private without being remote. The room was a double with air con, private shower, and had cable TV. and was very clean and freshly decorated, with views across a forested valley. On site was a small coffee bar, where staff would willingly provide snacks and beverages, even after breakfast time for us late risers! Breakfast was flexible, and the cook spoke good English, and has lived in Germany, so also had some German, which could be useful. We had a local rice dish with an egg for breakfast, several times, and they offered a selection of cooked foods, toast, croissants and even English bread!! Opposite the B&B is a restaurant, which was good value and certainly popular with the local Thai population. The resort is on a road which leads up to villages further up the mountain. They were starting to offer hiking trips with local guides, into the forest some overnight camping, which we did not take up, but we did walk into the jungle a bit, following a marked route after having consulted staff. They also had a BB gun range, which we tried and thoroughly enjoyed, even though my wife turned out to be a crack shot, whilst I was a flop. The resort also was starting to trial some quad bikes up into the mountain, and I had a go with one of the guides, although I did not follow the whole route. It was great fun, and now wish i'd done the whole route. The location is superb with good deck areas and panoramas across the valley. there is abundant birdlife in the area. The owners were able to direct us to local places of interest, including a temple nearby, two seperate locations with hot springs, one with a very active geyser, and trips into Chiang Mai. they were also able to recommend advice as to other places to visit and accomodation. These included Maesa elephant camp (highly recommend) and a town, can't remember the name, with an umbrella factory, all handmade from bamboo. We got a couple of insect bites, but probably our own fault for not covering up properly, and it was a little cold first thing in the morning when i went wandering after the local wild life, as the resort is initially shaded a little by the mountain, but plently warm enough once the sun is up. The owners are a Thai lady and her English husband, and were extremely welcoming and the perfect hosts. They have several staff, all of whom are encouraged to learn and speak English, and the staff were polite, helpful and very attentive. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Sorry, can't find anything bad to say about this place, it was really relaxed and very enjoyable.
