Got a private room. Very cozy. very peaceful outside in the nature

We appreciated the manager letting us shift our separate rooms to one two bedroom cottage at the last minute. As the heavy rains came during the night, we were beyond grateful that we were not in a tent or in a small metal "economy room" with no bathroom! We were safe and sound in a lovely two bedroom cottage with a well equipped kitchenette, large living room, covered deck and a walking path to the ocean (before the rain came). We were only there one night, checked in late and left early, but our time there was greatly appreciated.

What a gem of a hostel! Our private room had a beautiful balcony that overlook the forest and the beach. It was very clean and cozy, and the bed was really comfortable! Would definitely stay again!

This place was EXCELLENT value for money! It's a very close drive from the pancake rocks but also has access to another great track taking you down to a beach with amazing views. I stayed in a private room in a shared house, the kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could need. Bathrooms clean. And the bedroom was lovely and cozy, with windows overlooking the trees made you feel like you are really in the forest. Friendly staff and easy parking.

Give this place all 5 stars but please add heater at dorm, thank you for having this as a affordable place for solo

The hut or home is old but situated in a beautiful area.  The single room I used is not suitable for tall person as the ceiling is very low (it’s an attic room) easily bump head to the padded wooden beams.

Stayed only one night in the Tui cottage. Really peaceful with a fantastic beach not far. No real issues with the accommodation but the 2 ring hob is showing its age and the kitchen window doesn’t fasten properly thereby letting in the sandflies. Otherwise we had a really great experience. Colin & Claire, Scotland

If you want to feel that you are in the middle of nature but dont want to pay an arm and a leg then James has the spot for you with a variety of budget accomodation.
Clean and well equipped. Its a very peaceful location that is close to the pancake rocks

A lovely stay at Te Nikau Retreat in Punakaiki. It’s basic but exactly what we needed and pretty good for the price. We stayed in Koru which is just a bed but that’s what we were expecting so it was great for us. Very close to the toilets. Good kitchen facilities. Shower pressure isn’t brilliant but it’s fine for one or two nights. Great location - just a few mins away from the Punakaiki rocks and only a short walk down to the beach for sunset which was recommended to us by the owner. He even gave us some insect repellent too. Only minor - but maybe try to put the lights near the signs in the walkway down to the beach as we did get a little lost on the way back to the hostel in the dark.

Tui Cottage

Lovely one night stay. So nice sleeping within the rainforest. We caught a super rainy day and wish we could’ve explored the beautiful property more. The room was nice. We slept listening to the rain come down. The shared lodge felt quiet and still private. Seemed a nice spot to connect with other travelers if you had more time while there. 

Nice stay in Punakaiki 

A wonderful retreat and place to relax while exploring the area. The host was very friendly and accomodating. A communal living room area to chill and meet others was great. Had a quiet night sleep in The Stargazer, it was incredibly peaceful amongst the native New Zealand forest. 
Will be sure to be back for a third visit sometime in the future for sure!

Peaceful and relaxed stay

We stayed for one night, the room was clean with a comfy bed, full use of the kitchen including a stove, microwave, kettle and fridge. There was a large communal lounge area and two showers in our lodge which was plenty. Make sure you bring your food with you as there are no supermarkets for 40 minutes from the property and few restaurants that are expensive if you’re on a budget.

Good stay but bring your food with you!

Upon arrival, I was upgraded to a single room even though I had booked a 6-bed dorm. The place was fantastic - warm, comfortable, homey. The kitchen and bathroom were clean and tidy, and there was a nice communal area with books, guitar, fireplace, etc. The retreat is in a beautiful location, only a few minutes walk from the beach and right next to the Truman Track.

Massive thank you to Chris for going above and beyond to make my stay extra special. He offered me a bike to get places when I told him that I didn’t have a car, took us to see some glow worms, penguins and some wonderful hidden beach spots. Thanks also to Marley for the doggy cuddles and licks!

Overall a wonderful experience - I’ll be 100% staying again whenever I’m in Punakaiki next!

Beautiful place and unforgettable experience!

We stayed in the Tiro Moana room. It was basic but had everything we needed. Nice view from the patio of the ocean, can sit out here and enjoy the views. Located in a wooded area with a path you can take to walk down to the beach. See the sunset here! Bring bug spray: there were black flies down by the water. If you don't have any they sell it too. Option for freshly baked bread, butter, eggs, coffee for a small fee down in the kitchen area. It was convenient to see the Pancake Rocks. The office staff were all welcoming and friendly.

Great stay

Accommodation options are relatively limited in Punakaiki. Chose this place based on the location and the price. I booked for a single private room. Was upgraded to a double private room (Lavender room in Rata Lodge) as the single private room building was closed. 
Pros: beautiful rainforest setting and only a short walk to a stunning beach. 
Cons: The room smelled damp. The house was also a bit dated and sound traveled well throughout the house. 
In short, will probably stay here again however would probably opt for one of the private cabins.
