My hubby and I were invited by Shawn to check out his B&B this fall and experience small-town Holland with a healthy dose of Canadiana. In the heart of a charming Dutch market square, 't Shanda Lee boasts proximity to a handful of cafes, bars, and restaurants. It's even possible to get a cup of Tim Horton's coffee at nearby Canadian restaurant Mondani. In the mornings, breakfast is a simple affair at the B&B but definitely hits the spot (try the pancakes!). Often served by Shawn, he isn't one to shy away either. Feel free to ask him why he moved from Canada to Holland - you're sure to enjoy a fun story or two, all the while being privy to classic-Canadianisms and charm. In the evenings, we loved retiring to the 'Green Room' (our bedroom) after dinner in a nearby town (try the Moulin Bistronomie in Borculo). In our room, though modest, we could easily enjoy a full view of the square, making it ideal for a cozy-up: elbows resting on the window ledge from which we'd watch the local happenings. All the while, we sipped on a cup of Joe and snacked on fresh baked cakes (provided by 't Shanda Lee's baker). For the second day, bikes can be rented affordably within walking distance of the B&B; many quaint villages are only 10-15 km away - so they're easy to reach quickly. If you fancy a lie-in instead, like I did, take a soak in the claw-foot private bath. Afterwards, extend your afternoon into the evening with a brisk stroll through the market square and a pint over at Babbelaer's Pub (I loved their Porter). 't Shanda Lee is quiet, peaceful, and humble: making it Ideal for friends, families, and cyclists looking for a relaxing weekend: one that is kind to the wallet and chalked full of stories instead.
