Mantua is a lovely, interesting, culturally wealthy town which so far is still visited primarily by Italians; it's one of the most wholesomely un-touristy places we've been in Italy. And if you're going, in our opinion, this is the place to stay. The owner and host is extremely charming and helpful. Location is superb, privacy excellent, and our room was delightful, comfortable and well appointed. But there's nothing to beat opening your (very old, large) windows onto Piazza Sordello to greet the day, and gaze across at the old Gonzaga family's Palazzo Ducale. Before you decide it's too expensive, read the detail about the history of the family and the building. You'll probably realise this is a unique and unforgettable opportunity, and then you'll contact Signor Castiglioni to make a booking. Yes, it is a unique and unforgettable place to be. And PS: in case these are on your mind, we appreciated the air conditioning, a really great shower, and the elevator.
