The Castle

spent three whole weeks in one of the cottages (mews) ... very cozy and private. if you want a quiet, secluded, get-away-from-it break in a lovely setting ... then this is the place. sharon, the owner, is very thoughtful, attentive and helpful. 
we left there with tons of fond memories.

The castle is a carefully maintained and exceptional historical place to stay and enjoy a wonderful experience next to an interesting harbour. Our very comfortable studio room overlooked the water and the quality bathroom products are always a bonus. Excellent breakfast choices served by charming staff. The grounds are a pleasure to walk around and enjoy. We would definitely recommend and hope to return.

Sharon welcomed us warmly when we arrived and gave us a great summary of the castle’s history. Felt amazing to sleep in a room that has been a home to people for over 400 years!  Delicious breakfast and beautiful grounds to explore. Right on the water. Would go back for sure - and stay longer than just one night!

Exceptional lodging! The Castle contains generations of care, history, and charm. The grounds are filled with blooms and scents that instantly soothe the soul and transport you out of the stressors we all face. The room was spotless, special touches to make your stay restful and luxurious. Having stayed in dozens of b&bs- easily a top three- the breakfast attendant was exceptional and the hostess was so kind to recommend a wonderful dinner at a pub just a short walk away. 
Worth the drive- but try and stay longer than one night! We wish we had!

The Castle is simply the classiest place to stay in the whole of West Cork. Of genuinely historical importance, and full of relevant paintings, ancestral portraits, coats of arms  and even a uniform and helmet worn at the Battle of Waterloo, this is the real thing. Book the big room Chauvage, its worth every cent.

The Castle is a beautiful, peaceful hideaway on the outskirts of Skibbereen. We stayed in the Archbishop's room, with stunning views over the the inlet at the edge of which The Castle sits. A wonderfully comfortable bed, with a modern, pristine ensuite, the house delivers as a boutique getaway for couples. The honesty bar was well stocked, and the breakfast was both delicious and generous. We chose very well with our weekend getaway!

I have more pictures of the castle and the grounds than of any place I've ever slept.  It's like sleeping in a museum (except it's quiet and comfortable and uncrowded), the owners are tremedous, and the food is superb.  I've never stayed in any place like it.  Even the toilets are gorgeous!
Oh, and there's a fantastic restaurant (Mary Ann's) and a bar with trad. music just up the hill from it.  All within a 5 minute walk.

The entrance to this castle as you come down the hill is simply charming. So wonderful to see this old building so beautifully maintained. We were welcomed by Sharon and shown to our room which was extremely comfortable and had a breathtaking view of the harbour.
The peace and serenity here was a welcome break from the normal hustle and bustle of life.
Breakfast the next day was excellent, good range of options available, beautifully cooked and well presented.
Wonderful spot to totally relax.


Had the pleasure of staying one night at the Castle on a cycle trip through West Cork. First impressions last, with the beautiful entrance gate and well kept gardens.  The internal of the building was even better with  the beautiful dining room, staircase and bedrooms, complete with  balcony overlooking the bay, fabulous atmosphere,  pleasant staff,beautiful cooked breakfast, and secure lock up for our bikes, definitely the highlight of our trip, and an experience no to be missed. Love to make a return visit sometime soon,  Thanks. 

The Castle at Castletownshend  is a jewel in the crown of West Cork. Everything - the room, the en-suite, the Vita soaps, the sofa with the view over the League, the full Irish, the spicy omelette, the walks up to Swift’s Tower and the loop - was top class. Although we were worried we might miss the checkin time - we were flying in from the Middle East - Sharon was there waiting for us. In a flying visit, our room was an oasis of calm. 100% would stay again - hopefully many times over.

This is an old building steeped in history. The room was smallish but contained everything needed. A nice touch were the bedside charging stations which totally solved the usual hunt under the bed for an extra socket or one within reach of the bed so common in hotels.
It is B&B only . Their breakfast is however superb and caters to all tastes.
Dinner can be had at the nearby Mary Anne pub

Would stay here again in a heartbeat

The 90 acres of grounds are great for exploring and private harbour side walks
