I absolutely love staying at Higher Tideford. This was my second stay but with different friends who appreciated it as much as I do. If you are a fan of highly standardised prestine hotels, then maybe this is not the place for you. However, what I love is the relaxed atmosphere, the romantic gardens, the extremely private pool in a walled gar den, very comfortable beds with quality bed linen, fantastic breakfast and last but not least the lady who presides over it all. I do feel that the previous negative comments made by some were unnecessary. When I needed anything during my stay, ie, Milk, Diana who is always on hand would be only to happy to oblige, she happily chilled a bottle of bubbly we brought with us.

Have never felt more welcomed!
The house is beautiful and quirky and the hostess is absolutely charming. Definitely worth staying! The garden and pool are well kept and lovely! We had a fab time and we will definitely return!

,Definitely not a destination for people looking for a sterile boutique hotel experience but it was perfect for us.  Our host, Diane, was charming and welcoming and we felt very at ease and comfortable. The gardens have a wonderful rambling country cottage feel and the pool, situated in a walled garden, was deeply refreshing on a scorching hot day.  Our bedrooms were clean and very comfortable and there were all the amenities we would need.  Breakfast was a feast! Thank you Diane.... next time we will be back for longer!

A night at higher tideford is better than any medicine!

A quirky and bohemian slice of heaven

Stunning!

I feel i have to report on the negatives first however, to begin, Upon arrival we were greeted by Diane, a very warm and welcoming host/owner who offered us tea in the lounge and we enjoyed some conversation while fussing her gorgeous dog Basil..... Sadly our first impression of our "Delux" room was far from warm or welcoming! It was tiny, barely furnished and extremely cold as the heating was "off"! On inspection, we found the TV had no power cable, there was no milk or sugar for the tea and the radiator control knob was completely broken off! The wardrobe doors were very hard to slide and the small bathroom had no heating and no toiletries. 
Infact, we were surprised that considering it was very cold outside, the lovely 17th century house was cold throughout (this was 4pm), even though there was a beautiful log burner in the huge lounge it wasnt on. All of this was NOT a good "first impression" for us even though the "missing" bits and bobs in the room were rectified. 
In the morning, we needed to be up and out fairly early but we found the room still extremely cold as the heating  did not come on until 8am! There was no heater in the bathroom and after running the "hot" tap for a couple of minutes, it was very clear i was never in fear of scolding myself! The lovely Victorian shower head connected to the tap, just about dribbled out warm water and filling the bath for a "nice soak" was totally out of the question as the water would never have stayed hot enough! So i chose to have a simple wash at the sink for both days of our stay! My wife managed to kneel in the bath for a very quick "splash n dash"! 
On a positive note, the bed was comfortable and clean sheets were provided each day. 
Breakfast cooked by Diane was superb! Locally sourced produce tasted great and we were lucky to get a Goose egg. There was a nice choice of items, including home made preserves. Very tasty indeed.
Diane was lovely, as was her food and the wonderful Basil, but in all honesty, the room was a total let down. i was not on a "witch hunt" to find every little fault, but in this case, i feel i need to give an honest  report for future reference. Ive included some photos of the room, including areas i havnt mentioned.. sometimes, pictures say more than words. For the record, we were offered a small discount on the room price due to our concerns.

Fabulous host but dreadful room !

Higher Tideford is in a beautiful part of the country, but the house was in a very tired sorry state, we paid big money for a house where the oven did not work, swimming pool pump had broken,  windows and doors did not lock properly, stains on sheets, duvets with holes in and no curtains at bathroom windows, very very disappointing.
