A wonderful hidden treasure. Vanessa is the perfect hostess, the house is stunning and if you want true peace and quiet, this is the place to be. Fresh scones and cream on arrival, plenty of tea and coffee in the room with fresh milk and lovely options available for breakfast. Very accommodating of 'bikers' and a wonderful location to base oneself for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
Just perfect.

Once again, Vanessa looked after us in the best way possible.  It is no exaggeration to describe Thornton Lodge as luxurious, from the spacious reception area and welcoming lounge and outside seating, to everything in the individual rooms, from a huge comfy bed to a fridge with fresh milk in the room and even the provision of wine glasses.  She's also very attentive to individual needs, so when we asked for Earl Grey tea, our room was topped up every day with plenty of Earl Grey tea bags for us to enjoy at our leisure. Thornton Lodge has an idyllic situation on the side of a hill on a very quiet (but not inaccessible) road, but equally it is a superb centre for exploring Wensleydale to both east and west, and Vanessa is a walking encyclopedia of suggestions for places to walk or drive to.    I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Thornton Lodge as a base for a glorious Wensleydale holiday.

Just returned from a lovely four nights at Thornton Lodge. Such a peaceful, restful and relaxing place to stay. High quality throughout - large country house, beautiful grounds, exceptionally clean room with high quality fixtures and fittings and everything you'd expect of a 5☆ place. As other reviews mention, our host Vanessa made our stay special, with her warm welcome, local knowledge, quality breakfasts and interesting stoies about the house, it's history and it's renovations and upkeep needs.

Beautiful house, fantastic room, we were so comfortable and had a fantastic sleep. Breakfast was top quality products and kept us full all day. The best part of our stay was meeting Vanessa, the host. What can I say, Vanessa is so bubbly and friendly and puts an instant smile on your face when you speak to her. When we arrived, Vanessa met us with the warmest of welcomes and her homemade scones with jam and cream..what a touch. Vanessa was a font of knowledge about the area and just a total breath of fresh air, she has such a zest for what she does and strives to make your stay as perfect as possible..Thankyou Vanessa and your husband Tim for helping us with a flat tyre on our day of departure..Highly recommend Thornton Lodge and Vanessa the 5 star host and owner of this beautiful place..Gary and Vicki Atkinson xxxx

Absolutely beautiful rooms, had room 9 with the four poster bed. Very spacious and a lovely view out onto the lawn and countryside beyond. The bed linen crisp white cotton and a nice comfy bed, bathroom also very spacious with all the toiletries you could possibly need and fluffy white towels. Fridge with fresh milk, complimentary bottle of wine and jam and cream scones on arrival. Our host Vanessa couldn't be more welcoming, she was very helpful and informative with regards to places to eat and visit. Breakfast also lovely and Vanessa is most accommodating with anything you might require for breakfast. The house is in the most tranquil place I have ever stayed. Loved every minute.

I looked at lots of properties before booking Thornton Lodge for an Anniversary treat. I had to cancel the original weekend at the very last minute due to an injury but Vanessa was very gracious and let me rearrange to another date. I choose room 5 which was large, very light and had lovely view over the gardens. So peaceful
The toiletries, bedding etc were first class and the cooked breakfast very lovely. Real coffee made my day!  Nearby pubs serve great food for evening meals. In short, couldn’t fault  our stay. Thank you Vanessa

The whole experience is made 6 star by Vanessa ( the owner) who always goes the extra mile. 
She is fantastic. Making sure that you are well informed about the attractions of the Dales. And that your stay is unique.

 Vanessa runs a beautiful B&B and really looks after her guests.  The rooms are well appointed and spacious with very  comfortable beds. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful, complete with homemade marmalade and jams. There was a lovely plate of fresh scones with jam/cream awaiting us upon our arrival which went well with pot of tea served to us in the lounge. The property was set among the farms in Thornton Rust and was an incredibly tranquil and restful place to stay.  It was well located for us to do day trips all over the dales.

We stayed at Thornton Lodge from Sunday to Tuesday morning but wish it had been longer. This is a beautiful house with a fascinating history and we had a lovely room overlooking the garden. Vanessa is a wonderful host and the room was full of lovely personal touches, including scones on arrival. A fridge was stocked with milk, cream for the scones and big enough to store drinks for days out. The breakfasts were excellent with homemade jams and marmalades and good quality ingredients. Clean, very comfortable with lovely areas for guests and seats in the garden to sit and enjoy the peace. Lovely scenery around the area and plenty of places to go. Vanessa provided a scenic tour route with information about various  local places which was really enjoyable. Truly excellent, no hesitation in recommending Thornton Lodge - we had a wonderful break.

Excellent two night stay in this superb country house. Built around 1909 it almost has a stately home feel to it.
Set in grounds with ducks, hens and rabbits roaming free, it's peaceful and picturesque.
Our room, apparently the smallest bedroom, was more than you get at the average B&B, combined with the largest bathroom there. The furniture is tasteful, solid wood and classic. The bed exceptionally comfy. The breakfast excellent, cooked how you request it.
But the icing on the cake is Vanessa, the owner. She simply cannot do enough to make your stay memorable. Scones, jam and miniature wine in the room on arrival. Help and advice with booking evening meals and advice on local car journeys which turned out to be quite spectacular, particularly the drive through the Buttertub pass to the Tan Hill Inn.
Vanessa is a gem and overall we would not hesitate to stay there again or recommend it to anyone who wants a first rate place to stay.
