Pretty much like another reviewer has written this place has two sides to it. Sadly, the first impressions are not good as the welcome door, come pub area is pretty much dated but currently undergoing a much needed refurbishment. If you can bypass that (we did) the rooms, albeit outside were newly decorated, modern but basic but lovely and clean. A lovely warm welcome by the owner & two consecutive well cooked full English breakfasts. The town which hosts some lovely bars, pubs, hotels etc is 5 minutes in a car or a short walk. A lovely place and I look forward to seeing the much needed newly refurbished, entrance, come pub if and when we return. 

Short Break 

The pub is horrible. Dusty, dirty, broken windows, and toilets are awful. I hate that places like this (where there is no where else to wait at Abergavenny station) can get away with being so bad. I would never come here again. I can't believe there is a hotel here as well

Please read the whole review because the 3 stars needs a bit of explaining.

This place has 2 faces, the hotel and the rest of it. The hotel bedrooms are brand new. Everything is clean, comfortable, and functional. Definitely happy with that. 

The rest is old, shabby, and in need of a huge face lift. In fact, they may be in the midst of that. The breakfast room is a hodge podge of stuff thrown together. No ambiance at all. The shared bathroom is horrid. I imagine the hostel looks the same.

The staff is attentive and the hot cooked breakfast was prompt and good. 

There is a parking lot and on street parking. It's super convenient to the train station too. There are restaurants within an easy walking distance.

So 4 stars for the bedroom and breakfast. Maybe 1 for everything else.

The 3 Stars Needs an Explanation

Stayed recently paying £60 a night. I usually have very low expectations of Great Western which I acknowledge as being one of the UK’s worse hotel chains- I wasn’t left too disappointed. 
The lads running the place are increasingly helpful and friendly but you walk in and think Trainspotting the movie not Savoy London. 
Room wasn’t clean ( cobwebs in bathroom- used razor and buns not emptied and carpet hadn’t been cleaned . The room had been recently painted but hardly modernised and beds almost listed! 
Hotel just feels old and sits above a “locals” bar- friendly but definitely has its own character! 
So it’s got it’s own vibe for sure but it would appeal to people on a budget or workers passing through not wishing to spend a fortune but you do get what what you pay for and look around first just in case there’s anywhere else with vacancies. Hard to believe it’s a branded hotel which just shows how basic Grest Western has become.

You get what you pay for

You get a completely clean and cheerful small room at a decent price at The Great Western: very good value. It is right next to the railway station, so conveniently located, and the guy in the bar is super-helpful while the ladies who serve breakfast are sweethearts. Hard to beat -- recommended!

I have put this as friends as my daughter is an adult - booked on the off chance. Everyone has been so friendly, it’s been great. Facilities are basic, beer is good. Two minutes from the station if that. Can’t say more but I am not easily pleased!

Love it, will be back

Stayed here with a friend and his lad to walk in the nearby hills and it was an excellent base to explore the area, in a quiet location 2 mins walk from the railway station and around 5 mins brisk walk from the town centre. Go expecting a pub with rooms (and a friendly welcome) and you won't be disappointed. This is nice old building with rather tired decor in places, but our room was fine and the beds comfortable. The shower delivered the goods too. It's not a five star hotel, but I'd prefer this to paying through the nose for indifferent and impersonal service. I called ahead and mentioned I was vegan and was fully catered for with a great cooked breakfast, non-dairy spread for the toast, and soya milk too - all served by a cheerful waitress who was also vegan. We got a warm welcome from the barman on arrival, checked in and were shown to our room. Later the owner introduced himself and offered us a drink 'on the house' because the mirror in our room wasn't mounted on the wall - we hadn't mentioned it so this was a very hospitable and much appreciated gesture. We definitely plan on going back, suited us perfectly.

Comfortable B&B and very friendly

Excellent range of real ales. Couldn't believe they had Ruddles - like being back home in the East Midlands. Slightly made up for England's defeat. Good place to go after a match at the Principality stadium.

After Rugby drink

Booked this B&B for a Saturday night when going to a local restaurant,a really warm welcome,our newly refurbished room was excellent warm,clean and comfortable. The locals in the bar were ever so friendly and made us feel welcome.This was all topped off with a super breakfast in the morning.For the price excellent value for money,thank you The Great Western.

One night stay

Arrived just in time to watch a Wales international after a day walking in the Black Mountains. Place was full of amusing locals who  were clearly enjoying! The bar area is quite “traditional” in terms of a Welsh pub so we had an idea what to expect in terms of the room. Well, how surprised we were! After being taken down a side path (through a locked gate), then past a few broken windows, the room was below the main bar area and it was stunning! Super clean and modern, and that goes for the bathroom too. It was just right to wind down after the day. Breakfast included in the bargain price of £60 too. Honestly can’t fault this place!
